I have heard a rumor that Harley is dropping the Wide Glide from future line-ups. Does that check with anyone and if it does sound right, does anyone know the reasoning behind it? It's a beautiful bike and I would hate to see it go.
Technically it's already happened, as for '08 it's only available as the anniversary edition. That rumor has been around for over 6 months now, but won't know for sure until '09s are announced. Too bad if true, since it's such a great looking bike!
No doubt about it. As Chipstah said, the 105 Anniversary build was/is the last of the FXDWGI.. The Street Bob and Fat Bob are kind of the family replacement. Which IMHO you would still have to drop plenty more money on forward controls and other pieces and parts to build what has been stock on the FXDWG. (Just one of the reasons I chose mine)
I have an inside track and I do know for sure there will not be an 09. Have not heard what the reasons were, I guess everyone keeps buying softies despite the fact dynas ride smoother. :-}
I agree it is a shame.. I too drive a wide glide.. Guess we can call ours "Classics" now?
That is a damn shame, well i guess I will be forced to hold on to mine now lol. Seeing as it will have been the last year of not being a duracell battery lol. Not that I planned to get rid of it anytime soon
HD added the Street Bob, Fat Bob, Crossbones and the Rocker. The MOCO saw a potential market in the bobber type bikes and made the correct call, they seem to be quite popular. The Street Bob is affordable enough, and many of those that might have purchased a Sportster jumped right on the Street Bob which also helped drive the sales. So far the Rocker has not exactly set the world on its ear but it is difficult for the dealerships to sell a machine that is all but impossible to obtain in any quantity. The Wide Glides position as the high end of the Dyna Glide line results in fewer sales. Deleting the slower selling Wide Glide from the line up was a marketing and economy of manufacturing move that that makes sense. It may be returned in later years when interest wanes in some of the other bikes. Depending on how bad the economy gets the MoCo could end up dropping other bikes from the line as well.

Arcane
good analysis.
When the St Bob was added, I'm sure it was not the intention of the MOCO that it would kill the WG, but I'd guess that's what happened. People went up the Dyna line - liked the black engine treatment of the SB, looked at the sticker price on the WG, and went right back to the SB.
Don't be too quick to cry in your beer 'bout the demise of the Wide Glide. How many times has the MoCo dropped the Springers only to bring them back in a year or 2? What about the original Dyna Convertible? (known as the FXDXT the 2nd time around) How many Sportsters have come & gone only to reappear? The Softail Custom? There may or may not be a 2009 Wide Glide but it'll be back if indeed it gets dropped.
