anybody had any luck rollin with an ACC novelty helmet with a DOT sticker on the back?
Depends where you live and who stops you. You'll have a hard enough time with a hard-*** LEO in NCwhilewearinga true DOT ACC helmet because the new law says an approved helmet "should" have about 1" thick polystyrene liner. ACC's aren't that thick so they may question its authenticity to begin with. If it's as thin as most novelties, it won't fly at all. In NC, the helmet has to state DOT with a manufacturer installed sticker on the rear outside of the helmet and on a permanently installed tag on the interior of the helmet. Ever looked inside a DOT legal helmet with the HD brand name on it?Most if not all that I have looked atdon't say anything about DOT approved on the inside - but they are. So, where does that leave people riding in this state with those helmets? Time will tell.
i wondered about that since the 1 DOT helmet i had didnt have anything inside it, just the sticker on the back.
no helmet laws in my state but i have to have one to get my license and i am surrounded by helmet states so i have to get one.
i got a big dome anyway and a helmet doesnt help matters
Yep, I think more people hate the DOT's than like them but a lot of people feel that safety comes first no matter what and you can't fault that. This topic has been a hot one between me and friends and a lot of people in NC (see Southeast forum here) lately. It has been discussed and argued, ad nauseum, and there is no easy solution. But, if I could find one that I can live with for my "mug", then everyone should be able to.
I was shopping at Meijiers last night and happened upon some full faced helmets for $80 dollars or so, they had to be BMX helmets or maybe "snow helmets', but they had the "DOT" sticker on them, and they were not a good helmet. I would not order a helmet online unless I knew for certain what I was getting.
I recently purchased an ACC DOT flat black helmet from The Helmet Shop for $161 with free shippinghttp://www.helmetshop.com/items.asp?Cc=NEXL. The only thing I think could have been done better with this helmet are the nylon straps. You have to mess with them around your ears to get a decent fitand even then it's a little uncomfortable, but once you get going down the road you don't really notice it and itbecomes morecomfortable. If I can find a way to safely alter the nylon straps to fit better I will. I bought a stock Harley helmet when I bought my Lowrider and the ACC helmet is about half the size and weighs almost nothing. If you do a seach on the forum there are several members who have taken photos with the helmets after they got them to give you an idea of what they look like.
I got a skidlid. One of the only ones I tried on that didn't shroom head me like you said.
I've found that the ones with the ear protectors make the helmet look a bit smaller because it makes it a transition to the strap, whereas the ones with jsut straps tend to look pretty bad.
But go try on a skid lid if you can find a dealer.
I agree the skid lid fits the bill. I have two of them myself.
Thanks for all the input I really apreciate it. I am still searching and hoping to find a dealer so I can try some different brands on. The skid lid looks like a descent helmet I want to try one on. I got to get one before march 31st so I can pick my new fat bob up from the dealer. I have plenty time now but still worried.
my wife did extensive research to find the smallest DOT helmet bought one and rode less than 30 miles and decided she hated it because of wind drag pulling her head back and the mushroom look. hasn't used it since(stopped bugging me to get one too)
then she did more research on non DOT helmets. we both got kevlar carbon fiber. found some DOT stickers on line and stuck them on the back. no hassles yet.
