I went to a local shop to try on helmets today they had fulmer half helmets so I tried one on the color was flat black and it fit really well and was comfortable. It was still a little odd looking on my head everytime I try one on all I can picture is kazoo from the flintstones. The guy at the shop said he was getting skid lids maybe next week. He said they just ordered every color and size so there will be a variety to choose from. If that doesn't look descent I may just go with a novelty helmet and buy the dot stickers and take the risk. Whoever thoght that this was such a difficult descision.

I just bought the new Harley carbon kevlar flat black half helmet. It fits great, sits down well on my head, weighs nearly nothing, and looks real good for a DOT helmet.

I just use a skid lid and that's only when I'm riding through states that require helmets. I don't even have a DOT sticker on the back and have yet to be hassled. Only sticker on the back of my lid says "let those who ride decide".

The one on the front says "Smart *** white boy".

I recently purchased 2 helmets from moto direct usa. I got a german style helmet and a beanie helmet. I live in mass so it is required to wear a dot aproved helmet. I used to wear a novelty helmet but decided to follow the law as I have no interest to get hassled by law enforcement. I was excited to get the helmets and when I tried them on I was let down. They make me look like a big mushroom. Is this the way it is with dot helmets. They are so big and bulky and look really stupid. I still want a DOT helmet my question is where can I buy a descent looking helmet that is not as bad looking as the ones I got. And does anyone get hassled by the LE for wearing a novelty helmet.
I live in MA and have been wearing a novelty for ten years. I haven't been hassled yet. Typically they won't hassle you unless you give them another reason to pull you over.

From what I'm hearing here in NC with the new law, a fake DOT sticker will just be a waste of time. It will take them some time to train everyone up for enforcement but they are WELL AWARE of people putting stickers on the novelty helmets and are being told how to spot a non-compliant helmet both on the side of the road when they have you stopped and while you are riding with one. If you get stopped here for a helmet violation, the DOT sticker on the back will not be any good if you don't have a tag sewn on the inside that indicates DOT compliance as well. However, it's a fact that there are DOT legal helmets on the road today and still for sale in stores that do not have the tag on the inside. I have no idea how they are going to handle those situations.

I'm in NC and wear a novelty helmet with a DOT sticker I put on it. Some cops I know wear the same thing...Other cops say that they are'nt gonna mess with anyone about it. I guess that some still will tho.The new law here in NC is still very VAGUE about what a DOT approved safety helmet is... If I get aticket..I will fight it. It will cost the state about 860 bucks if it goes to trial. If I lose,I pay $125. If I win, I pay nada, but state still pays. And I get the verysatisfiedfeeling of fighting for my rights, win or lose..Yep..I'm one of them stubborn bastids that likes to dress myself.
BTW- The Dept Of Transportation does NOT approve yer helmets.

Per the law the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles does, .... man he must stay busy lookin' at all those helmets all day!
I'm just a few barbecue joints down the road from you BobStreetBob. Back in 2006 I was reading the old wording for the state's helmet law and I found it a bit ambiguous. I actually called the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles (and/or emailed him) and eventually talked to an assistant of his who said back then that I "should" be wearing a DOT approved helmet. The new NC law just strengthens or takes some of the fishyness out of the old language. I still think it B.S. but I guess I'm going to try and find a full face helmet I can live with. I've worn a novelty german style Voss brand helmet since I started riding. Bought as safe as wearing two hats. I think trying to find a DOT approved half helmet looks worse than a full face but that's just my opinion. Try Cycle Gear on the corner of South Saunders and 70? or Chapaoke? in Raleigh/Garner.

I don't give a rat's *** what it looks like... I ain't in no fashion show, you know? Who cares?

I just wear the dot helment... it's perfectly comfortable.

Besides, here in North Carolina, everybody's been wearing them since January, when the new law came down... even thebiker gang / one percentertypes.

So, everybody looks the same. No biggie.

I have heard the complaints from guys about the new laws in NC about helmets. I guess they are planning on cracking down hard on folks this year. Up here, it doesen't seem that the cops concern themselves much with DOT helmets, even over in Jersey where they can be real ****** at times. IMO it seems the only way your gonna get hassled is if you give them a good reason to pull you over for something else ie: speeding, reckless driving, etc.

Same seems to apply for the seatbelts laws. Although you can now be pulled over if spotted not wearing one in your cage, most will not pull you over based on this, but your guaranteed an extra ticket in most areas if you get popped for any other type of violation.

I have not found a DOT helmet (3/4 or half helmet), which does not make me look like this:

Every half-helmet I've tried looks ridiculous - period. This is after about 4 months of trying helmets on locally, as well as ordering them online only to have to ship back each and everyone of them.

I ended up buying a vintage Shoei from Justified Defiance. *****'em.
