I went through the same thing with a helmet when i bought my harley.... i have 3 sitting at home in boxes... and 2 others i've returned.... i finally settled in on a Carbon Fiber Helmet .....not under any resignation, but because it honestly fit right, and looked good!....it's not a DOT helmet, but cost me over 150.00, anyway.... it fits perfectly.... comes with good velcro pads for fine tuning around the temples, etc. .....and i bought a nice vinyl DOT sticker to slap on it...
I have heard the complaints from guys about the new laws in NC about helmets. I guess they are planning on cracking down hard on folks this year. Up here, it doesen't seem that the cops concern themselves much with DOT helmets, even over in Jersey where they can be real ****** at times. IMO it seems the only way your gonna get hassled is if you give them a good reason to pull you over for something else ie: speeding, reckless driving, etc.
Same seems to apply for the seatbelts laws. Although you can now be pulled over if spotted not wearing one in your cage, most will not pull you over based on this, but your guaranteed an extra ticket in most areas if you get popped for any other type of violation.
I would venture to say, based on the LEO's I know here, that most here still won't be very concerned either. Some I know also ride and believe in individual's rights. I know2 state troopers, 1 sheriff's deputy, and almost all of the town cops around here. Most of them say they would never stop someone just for a helmet or not wearing a seatbelt. However, if they pull you over for something else and you aren't wearing a seatbelt, they will write you up for that too. One of the troopers I know here once told me that if I ever saw him pulling someone over just for not wearing a seatbelt, I'd know he was having an awful boring day. However, there are and always will be the "Barney Fifes" out there that want to enforce every law on the book. And, there are always the roadblocks. They call them license checks around here but that's where they write a lot of DWI's, driving w/o license, expired inspections, no seatbelts, etc. It won't surpise me to see helmet violations become part of those checkpoints as well. As long as there are some out there that will enforce this law, I don't want to deal with the hassle. If they were going to write me a ticket and let me be on my way, I too would go to court and fight it. But, I posted a thread in the Southeast forum to try and get some true "NC Helmet Law Enforcement Stories" and I've already seen 2 that said they were pulled over and given the option of riding off and getting a ticket or staying put until a DOT helmet could be brought to them. I even heard one extreme story about bikes being impounded. I can see myself 3 counties away calling my wife to drive to me and bring me an approved helmet. F that. I'll just wear the damn DOT helmet and live with it. There are a lot of laws on the books I don't like or agree with. This is just one of them. I'm not trying to fight all of them, so why deal with this one.
I think we are all our own worst critics when it comes to these things. I feel the same way wearing one of those things and then my friends tell me it doesn't look bad at all. I rode yesterday with a buddy that was wearing a DOT half helmet he wasn't happy with and felt silly in it. But, I thought it looked fine on him. I'll bet if we all wore them, they wouldn't seem near as silly looking. I finally found one that fits really good and looks decent and that's what I'm riding with from now on. Any full-face will do as long as it fits. I have one I bought the day I got my bike. It's nice when it's cold out but for everyday riding, I hate it. Regardless of what others say, I CAN'T hear or see as well with it on.
LOL! We call the DOT helmet look the "Kazoo" look (remember the cartoon alien guy?)...Almost all DOT half helmets look that way due to the amount of foam in there to meet standards. Same deal here in CA. Most of the time, the police don't bother, but, on occassion, I've seen folks get tickets. I wear a novelty helmet around town, but I wear a full face on most road trips. Additionally, I have a Bell Drifter helmet that I carved out about 3/4" of the foam. Sits much further down on my head. I have been searching for a good, surplus Kevlar helmet as well. Figure I can argue that one with the law if I ever had to...

I see your Schwartz is as big as mine!
I think you're dead on. I see people wearing helmets and they do not look nearly as ridiculous as I see myself. I'm going to look into the Fulmer you mentioned. I want one of each style helmet. I have a fullface I like, I have a 3/4 I like, and I want a half as well.
I don't know of a fullface that does not hinder vision and hearing at least somewhat. The HJC modular (CL-MAX) I purchased was good in the vision department. Peripheral vision was surprisingly good - but of course it's not as good as helmetless riding. I expected it to feel like I was looking through a paper towel tube but it's really not bad at all.

The Fulmer is no magic bullet just like the ACC wasn't for me. It's probably just like any other DOT half helmet. The model I bought just happened to fit me well. Interestingly enough, the best fitting full face I found was a Fulmer Modus Modular helmet. So, maybe someone that works there has a similar shaped head as me - who knows. Even within the Fulmer line, I tried the Trooper, the Ranger, and the Hombre. They all looked the same on the outside and basically the same on the inside. But when I tried each on, there was a distinct difference in fitment and look. You just have to hunt the one that fits you the best. My full face is "okay". I don't feel like it's dangerous. But, I don't feel as comfortable as I do with a half on. It's not nearly the same riding experience either. I feel a lot more free and "out there" with the half helmet on.
My half-helmet is a Fulmer Hombre. It fits well, and is comfortable. No complaints.
The problem with my full-face is noise. It doesn't hinder my vision, at all... but it seems to take the exhaust noise and concentrates it inside the helmet, while blocking out other noises. It gets real "boomy" inside. Sounded cool at first, until I realized I couldn't hear anything else.
Again, while clever, that won't fly here. Now, if you come up with an idea to make a realistic looking DOT compliant tag and professionally sew it into the helmet liner, and you get a cop that doesn't know his *** from a whole in the ground when it comes to telling a novelty helmet from a DOT compliant helmet, then you might be on to something.
NC law, effective 1/1/2008, compliant helmets will have a permanent sticker on the lower rear portion of the outside of the helmet affixed by the manufacturer stating that the helmet meets DOT standards and the helmet will have a permanently affixed tag in the inside of the helmet placed by the manufacturer stating the same. Also, DOT compliant helmets usually have about a 1" thick layer of polystyrene padding.
