Default 103 upgrade/performance mods

I have an 07 Road King THAT I LOVE! The 'ol lady and I have truly enjoyed touring on it but hey! a guy needs "the old scoot aroundtown bar hopper" so I bought a Super Glide. I am looking at the 103 kit but want the best bang for the buck. Can anyone tell me what they have done and the cost of it as well as dyno results? Any info you have would be appreciated! Thanks!!!

This has been pretty well discussed here: https://www.hdforums.com/m_2975766/tm.htm

In all honesty, after researching this, the real bang for the buck is the Stage 1 kit. After that, the gains are negligible for the top end kit at twice the cost. I believe that if you're really looking for that extra HP and Torque, you're going to have to get into the bottom of the motor. Don't get me wrong, there are some companies out there putting out great top end kits, but the $ you're going to put out for the 10-15 HP gained is going to more than double what you put out for a Stage 1.

I think I just repeated myself, but oh well...

Jake, 10-15 HP???

HAHA

chrome is nice,

but, I think we are talking closer to 30-40 horse,
and, more importantly torque.

$$$

And, can a stock engine handle that or are there other engine mods that would be needed?

Mud, from everything I've found and everyone I've talked to, I have yet to see anything near 30-40 horse and close to that in torque. I gained 14 1/2 HP with the Stage 1 and that brought my torque up to (if I'm not mistaken) about 92 ft lbs. I was on the phone with the dealership and they agree that the jump from Stage 1 to a top end kit isn't that much of an increase in either. If I were going to gain 30-40 for $2000 I would have done it, but no where have I found those numbers for what I wanted to do.

I've actually done a 103" build to my bike and before even chatting about final "NUMBERS" I can tell you the bike flat out hauls ***.

MUCH MUCH MUCH more powerful than the bike was before I had the motor massaged. The difference is simply night and day and anyone who has actually ridden a well thought out 103" bike would not disagree. the top of the powerband is scary at the last few hundred RPMs while the low-end pull power is simply phenomenal. the motor will pull from a stop without having to worry about the clutch- power power power.

my build is new so I have not had a dyno run, but the components are

se forged flat top pistons
big bore cylinders
258 cams
perf heads
all se

thundermax w/autotune

cost, about $3700 after it got all said and done

now on to real motor numbers and not jibber jabber-

I have attached dyno charts for a stock 96" v. 110", as per screaming eagle, direct from h-d

and a random dyno chart i had from a well known builder of 103" kits.

as you can see the 110" does not even come close AND you have to crack the case to make that upgrade

my real advice to you would be to go to the latus harley website and hit the askmike area and ask your questions there, they have dyno charts out the wazoo and a lot of inof on pretty much all the 103" builds, MIke is a harley perf consultant who works at aLatus and is the liason b/w customers wanting hi-perf motors and the mechanics who build them- he knows his **** about pretty much all the 103" options, all based on what your goals are.

good luck man!

"cost, about $3700 after it got all said and done"

That's double what I was going to pay for an HD kit. I'm sure the numbers wouldn't be even close considering I'm sure that kit is above and beyond what HD is offering. Like I stated, to get the kind of HP and Torque you're talking about, it's $$$. That's why I say, and I've read it many times over that the BEST bang for the buck is the Stage 1. After that, you have to want to part with some serious $ to get a good return. To me, it's the torque that I was looking at more than the HP as I'm a cruiser, not a speed devil.

I haven't had mine dyno'd yet but my 'Seat of the pants' feel since the build is significant. I've never really had that same 'seat of the pants' feeling with just the stage one. I'd do it again.
