What kind of seat are you using now?
I've always had lower back pain. Changed the stock seat to a Corbin calsic solo and felt much better with the stock shocks. The next step would have been the shocks.
Also have a friend who put air shocks off a 07 EGC on his 07 bob and he loves them - no more back pain for him. they bolted right on.
You may want to look at seat, shocks and riding position..

I had progressives but 1" lower than stock and it rode like a bulldozer. If you plan on slam'in then the ride will kill you.
I just went back stock on #1 setting and like the ride but I'am sure the air ride would be very nice.
