Ed, I just did mine and first off let me say WOW....what an awesome improvement but then again I weigh about 280lbs and did the progressive springs with extra heavy oil but what a difference. As far as sizes and such I used a 1 3/8" wrench as opposed to socket because the points on the socket chewed up the flats on the fork cap (looked kinda crappy) but thats just me. Also I was completely empty when I refilled my tubes and put in 26.6 ozs. per tube...didnt bother measuring from top just the amount recommended. Also be sure to cycle the tubes with just fluid in them to bleed the air out (bubble would suck). All good info from all posts just my .02. From the way you describe how you like to ride, dont put it off any longer. Youll love it.
Hi, don't you find it is much stiffer than the originals? I thought it was stiffer but, hey, it's like a piece of iron...
I installed a forkbrace as well. Can you find that the forkbrace could modify the compress/release act?
I used a heavy SE oil (15Wif I remember well)
I love the feeling, but here in Italy the streets are not like yours and in our old towns the vibrations I can feel on the handlebars are sometimes disturbing me.
I noticed that at idle with the bike on the kickstand the whole front end vibrate too much... any idea how to reduce it???
I am in the same boat as you, I picked up my springs a week ago but the weather turned cold again so I haven't put mine in either.
I'm not lowering the bike either and was also recommended to use 20wt oil I weigh 275.
I was under the assumption I could make the change without taking the forks apart or off the bike (mine is a 2001 FXD), just drain, pull caps off the top and replace springs and spacers and replace oil.
I think you would have to remove the tubes from the triple and dump out the oil.The newer Dynas don't have any drain plugs that I can see.If they've got some hidden someplace clue me in.Also the I asked Progressive what oil they recomended for my weight around 220 fully geared up and they recomended 15wt.My suggestiopn would be if you don't like the way they ride with 20wt dump it out and try again with 15 or even 10.
Mine's older w/narrow front endso it has the drain plugs, so I shouldn't have to take mine off.
Maybe while you have it apart drill and tap for some plugs so you wouldn't have to take apart again just for maintenance later.
I don't want to change my bike, and before mounting the spring set the vibration at the front end weren't at all!
Would try to remove the forkbrace and see what happend...
I read somewhere that if the fork brace were not perfectly level it can pinch the forks together and cause "stiction".So definately try that first then if that doesn't make a difference go with lighter fork oil.
thanks for that info in the middle of doing mine, the progressive insructions does'nt say anthing about the spring collar and with the spring collar in there there is no way i'm going to be able to compress the spring to tighten the tube cap and the dia. shows the pvc with the spring next to it what i'm i missing? (i'm lost that's why i'm typing this at 3am)
