I didn't have the problem getting the shifter on the spline, (that slipped right on) it was getting the bolt through afterwards that was the problem, that's where I had to make the slight modification.
But again, a file would have done the job too, but a Dremmel took like 2, maybe 3seconds.
Thanks Priest but several posts report a problem with the Kuryakyn kit and having trouble mounting the shift lever on newer Dynas. You're right though, you shouldn't have to pound but some have had to.
How did your Kuryakyn kit fit together Priest; or don't you have one?
I took my Kurys off when I installed Softail floorboards (you can see some photos at post #22 on the following link https://www.hdforums.com/m_2668394/tm.htm). I found the Kurywere easy to install and didn't take long. I have an '05 FXDI so not sure if '06-'08 are having difficulty with the shift spline. If you remove the bolt and nut in the photo, there should be no impediment to the shifter slipping directly onto the spline ... but, as I said, I have no experience with post-'05 models.
Bad example using my bike Priest. I did not have to pound my shifter on at all, as a matter of fact it went on quite smoothly. However, the groove in the spline was not large enough or wasn't aligned properly to allow my stock retension bolt to fit back through the shifter. So, what you are pointing out is the smaller bolt with washer and nut I had to use to fasten the shifter on there. However, now that I recently removed my shifter to adjust the position, and noticing that groove for the first time, I'm thinking I may have just not been positioning the shifter correctly to work that stock bolt through there. There is an o-ring between the spline housing and the shifter and I may have just needed to put some pressure on the shifter to get the bolt to line up with the groove well enough to go through properly. I am fine with the way it is now but someday, when I have nothing else to do, I may try going back to the original bolt.
Yeah ... well I guess it wasa matter ofconvenience.I seemed to recall my shifter had a bolt only vice bolt and nut ... now that you mention it.
Getting the grove lined up is very important to ensure it doesn't screw up the threads.Sometimes when the retainingbolt has been loosened, itmight not 'open up' as much and be a little harder to get onto the spline.
Have had mine since 01' (on my 00' FXDL). The only problem I had was with the rubber..they sent me replacement rubber. Far as placement..no problem. I did replace the shift linkage because it got a littler rusty. HD is probably a little better quality wise but will be more $$$ I'll bet. Kuryakyn makes good stuff that's fairy affordable but it's not top shelf (like Arlen Ness) but you don't have to break the bank.
I am wondering if this has been addressed in the newer Kuryakyn kits. No problem either way as I have pretty much decided on getting the Kuryakyn kit.
bad, I suggest calling Kuryakyn customer service and just ask them straight up if they are aware (they are aware, it's just a question of whether or not they will admit it) of the issues and if they've been addressed. I called them before I bought my kit to make sure an 06 kit would fit my 07 and then called them during my install about the bolt I had that had the wrong thread and they were very friendly and helpful both times. Later, when, due to my own stupidity I broke one of the peg mount bolts, I called again to find out of parts could be ordered separately to repare the kit, they were super-helpful again and helped me find the part numbers I needed and then they sent them right out for me.
Maybe I haven't had my long enough but I've had them over a year and I have to disagree that their "chrome is crap" or that the "quality is not quite as good as HD". First of all, I can't verify it but it has been reported here that Kury makes a lot of HD's chrome parts anyway. If you look at the 2 kits side by side, judge for yourself which one looks "beefier". I'm not saying 1 is better than the other but I don't think the quality of the Kury kit or their chrome is sub-par when compared to HD. I think it simply is a matter of preference which ones you like and want to deal with the install on.
Well I got the Kuryakyn kit from Eastern Performance and installed it yesterday. Thanks everyone for the help. It took me about2.5 hours from the time I opened the box until the time I rode. That includes pulling out tools and cleanup. I consider myself to be a good mechanic but by no means am I afast mechanic.
The shifter went on to the spline with little problem; it didn't "slip" on but merely required a little tapping with a hammer and a piece of wood block (to protect the metal) on the workbench; no grinding, no mallet. I was even able to use the original retension bolt from the shifter, just had to make sure the shifter was flush with the spline and it went right in. Quality on the Kuryakyns seems good they have more chrome bits than the HDs and they have a beefier appearance than the HD forwardswhich I like. If I had to guess, and I'm no metalurigist, I would say the quality of the chrome and metal is slightly less than that of the HD product but don't quote me on that. No problems with the right side air cleaner clearance and the chrome cap over the old shifter spline looks ok.
Would I recommend? Yup. no question especially considering I can go back to mid mounts easily should I ever decide to sell and I didn't have to pay the dealer $300 to install them.
glad your happy I know I am had for several months no issues Just some advice did you lock tite the peg mounts where bolt goes through I had to use red they kept coming loose now no prob
