Default Fat Bob handlebar swap - cable question

So I'm planning on changing out the standard drag style bars with the fat mini-apes harley offers. I'll be changing out the risers, too, so there won't be such an odd "up high" look with the bars. My question is (and hopefully someone has some fat bob handlbar-changing experience) if I change out the bars and risers, do I need to change out the cables? I figure that the difference is minimal, considering there are monster risers on the drag bars, so smaller risers with the mini-apes should equal the stock lines...Am I far off, or do I need to overhaul all of it? Any help is appreciated.

Using the wide-glide minis, which are same size as the ones in the accessories catalog, I changed brake, clutch, and throttle cables. Not really sure if needed to or not, but wanted the braided lines. Wiring for inside the handlebars was tight, but still enough length and avoided having to use extensions on them. check back later, I'll try to hold the old cables up for fitting to see if they would still work. i used the diamondback cables all around, which, to me blend well with the black denim, but the clutch cable is a little on the long side. i bought the wide-glide minis from zanottis, by the way, with the wide glide risers (08), and saved a few bucks, 150 listed, 115 or so from zanottis, the ones advertised in the accessories catalog are 200 in the catalog and 150 from zanottis. feel free to pm me any questions you might have. it took me about 4 days to do as took my time having never worked on a bike before, and with kids running around. take your time on the wiring, as far as de-pinning/re-pinning the connectors.

Thanks for the response. I wonder if there is anywhere that lists the OEM cable lengths...That would be a help.

Raining today in VA - measurements to follow shortly

Watie

OEM cable/brake line lengths, to avoid confusion, on the fat bob are:

Throttle cables - roughly 32" from one end to the 90 degree elbow
Clutch cable - roughly 64"
Brake line from the manifold below the triple tree to the lever housing - roughly 22"

I did a quick fitment check with my 10 1/2" minis, here's what I came up with for you:

Throttle cables would probably work, but might be a bit tight, and no real place to zip-tie them to the frame
Clutch - not likely to fit, will be pretty tight, will probably result in not being able to turn the h-bars completely
Brakes - from manifold to brake lever will not fit. The length from manifold to each caliper not important, so I didn't measure that. Note: the diamondback from the manifold to the calipers is a bit long as ordered from the P&A catalog. A little gaudy looking, but not to the point of annoyance.

Hope this helps

Watie

This is a change I personaly have not done. I would think if you drop to 1" - 1.5" risers like the ones that come on the 07-up FXDWG this will work well. Going down 4" - 5" and going up to 10" you might be good. Usually HD installs longer cables than neededon their bikes. The Clutch cable is going to answer the question for you. Unbolt the clutch cable bracket on the bars and see how much room there is for going up about 5".
If I can be of any help I would be willing to do so. Also if you figure this outit would be appreciated if you would let me know what you did to make it work. I will send you a tee shirt for your help.
Thank you!

My install, which I'm basing my measurements on is as for a Fat Bob which I swapped out the original drag h-bars and risers with the 08 Wide Glide Bars/Risers. I took my OEM cables/lines from my parts box, held them up as best I could on my FB, and came up with my fitment 'guess.' Without actually trying to re-install my fat bob OEM cables, etc. with my wide glide bars & risers, this is best I could come up with for ammodan. As I mentioned on earlier reply to this, my electrical lines were plenty long enough for the h-bar swap-out, but with very little left over to spare. In my opinion, the only viable re-use of an OEM cable on this bar swap out would be the throttle cables at best, which as I mentioned, would leave you with very little room on where to zip-tie them to the bike, and then you're stuck with a mix/match of cables and lines, unless you do as Wild1hd mentioned. the stock Wide Glide cables will work for fitment, with exception of the brake line, as the manifold on the fat bob is designed for the dual calipers, and, unless I'm wrong, the wide glide is a single disc up front. Maybe you might be able to use a tube bender to help in some of the fitment of the original stuff, just an idea, throwing it out there, don't know if feasible or not.
