I just shoved my linkage behind a bolt it took me about a half an hour and 6 beers between me and my best bud (he on the break side me on the shift side) its all still there and with a little hmmer work the crome cap fit on just fine
I'm needing the same thing, and I'll just say that having the little cover is not really optional. You'll leak from the hole when you put the bike on the side stand. With that in mind, does that little chrome cover have an O-ring?
NOTE ADDED LATER: This is not correct. The plug is strictly cosmetic, as a number of other posters have pointed out.
based on what I learned from my forward controls thread, the shaft for the mid controls is sealed from the primary lube, and to back this up I have had mine like this for the past 2 days and have not leaked a drop of primary lube
I took my bike to an indy to put my after-market forwards on. I figured I'd pay someone else and have the bike ready for the long weekend.
Why, oh, why did I do that?
It's always a bad sign when the tech calls up and asks, "Did these come with instructions?" Criminy. Second bad sign: explaining to tech what needs to be done.
Anyway, I pick up by SB at the end of the day, then join my friend who was gracious enough to drive me out to the shop for a couple of beers. We come out of the restaurant, and she observes a leak, I look and realize there's no cover plug! There's a small bit of oil under the hole, and it definitely came from the bike because you can see where it ran down the primary.
Soooooo...I don't know. Maybe this guy has borked up my bike, or maybe it really is important to have that little cover. Maybe it's something else. Don't know. DO know that I won't be going there again, never ever.
the shaft is inside of a sleeve through the primary... If it leaks after you put the primary cover back on you or the wrench did something wrong....gasket, o-ring or whatever...
pull out the shaft and the sleeve will still seal if the covers are installed properly....[sm=boink3.gif]
