Default Dealer or Stealer

Hey, New guy here from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I've searched the forum for exhaust and EFI info and there is alot of great stuff out there.But I'm still unclear. I bought my '08 Fat Bob off the showroom floor with the S.E 103" Stage II, S.E Air Cleaner, &amp\\; S.E Slip ons&nbsp\\;with no SERT just a remap. Great scoot, I love it. But I want to put different pipes on. When I called my dealer this is what I was quoted. Vance &amp\\; Hines Pipes almost $900 + Super Tuner (the newest one) $650 + four to five hours on the dyno for tuning at $130/hr. We're talking over $2000 total. Is that what all you guys have forked over for your pipes? Is a Super Tuner something I can tune? V&amp\\;H Fuel pack just as good? I can pick up the pipes for almost half of what the dealer wants on ebay. But they said there is no way I can do this myself on an EFI bike. Bullsh!t??
&nbsp\\;
Thanks,
&nbsp\\;
Matt

No way they are out of their minds! Way too high. The dealer I have been going to will install a race tuner for around $550 no mention of an extra charge for dyno.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.&nbsp\\;Does the Fuel Pak require tuning or just a plug &amp\\; play?&nbsp\\;

Well, remember folks, he's not dealing in U.S. funds...canadian.&nbsp\\; It may very well cost him more there but if you can get the same pipes cheaper anywhere, I'd say go for it. &nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;

Welcome to the forum.&nbsp\\; You might be able to get away with the 103 download with new pipes.&nbsp\\; I ran the download for break-in period and it wasn't that bad and I run non SE pipes.&nbsp\\; If you do put non SE pipes on your bike and you find it runs hot, pops etc you might have no choice but to get a tuner.&nbsp\\; If you do want to tune in your bike now to get the best of the build you will need to purchase a tuning device.&nbsp\\; I run SERT the problem is that you need to find someone that knows what they are doing or you will be dissapointed.&nbsp\\; The fuel pak will not allow you to dyno tune your bike.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;

yeah a fuel pack does not have the ability to tune a bike that has the 103 kit on it, that i am aware of...&nbsp\\; you would need a sert or pciii, i would choose pciii as you can get it mapped for your set up by fuelmotousa.com, you'd have to call and ask if they got a map for your set up with 103 kit, pipes you want, and a/c.&nbsp\\; the pcIII can be tuned on a laptop at home, you basically add and subtract gas at different rpms.&nbsp\\; so if you know if it runs baddly at a certain rpm you can play with it a bit and see how it changes.&nbsp\\; but a dyno tuner can also tune your bike with a PCIII to get it spot on if he/she is compatent...&nbsp\\; i would not buy any parts from the dealer, you can them under msrp at many places like easternperformance.com.&nbsp\\; plus they are a sponsor of the forum.&nbsp\\; save yourself some money and do it yourself.&nbsp\\; pipes should only take a few hours and pcIII will take 20-25 minutes!&nbsp\\;

I say, "Stealer!"

Shop around for the pipes and the tuner on your own.&nbsp\\; Installing the pipes appears to be more challanging than it really is.&nbsp\\; I was quoted 800 through the dealer to purchase my D&amp\\;D Fatcats from them with a 3 hour install @ $85.&nbsp\\; I bought them for about 600 and installed them myself.

As for the tuner, you're not paying for an install, because it just plugs in... I think you're just paying for the Dyno Tune utilizing the SERT.&nbsp\\; The guy I used, loaded a Fatcat map he already had and tweaked it to fit my Air cleaner and my bike.&nbsp\\; Took him less than 1.5 by modifying the one he already had to fit my application.&nbsp\\; However, 4 hours seems to be the norm.

Here's an excellent thread that Mud directed me to about tuning created by a certified tuner:&nbsp\\; 5 Questions to ask your tuner.

Best wishes!
