Just getting back from 1000 miles in 4 days I find myself thinking about going with a lid. Riding the North Shore of Superior and some sweet roads around the Boundary Waters in norther MN I realized a few things. First, I have and can ride without a helmet and have tens of thousands of miles logged like this [many of them when I was much younger].
During this trip weather ranged from 80s and sunny to 49 and rain. All of my riding gear held up less my face protection. Today my eyes, ears, sinuses, and skin are the only thing really feeling ride fatigue. I have good glasses that protect my eyes (Panoptix), usually wear ear plugs, often wear a leather cap, sometimes with a bandana for the face which is a lot to mess with putting on and taking off. And, ith the crap I took in the face from rain to bugs to rocks and other road debris being kicked up, I really find myself thinking it's time to get a lid+face shield. It's very clear that both the wife and I will be traveling like this again. She want to do the Black Hills next year.
Have any of you switched to a lid from no lid and have any advice? I'm thinking about a _good_ 3/4 helmet and not for crash protection as much as for overall face and head protection from the rain, wind, debris, etc. I have a 450+ mile trip I will be taking in a few more weeks and am thinking about getting something before I do another distance trip again. I want something that will increase my riding stamina and not add to the fatigue.
I'm curious on your thoughts, feedback, suggestions, etc. I don't want to drop $150-$200 and have a helmet just sitting in the closet.
I have an HJC AC-3 carbon fiber helmet. Real light and \\;you can go from visor to shield in about 30 secs and no tools. I got tired of getting sand blasted by all the crap on the highways here in VA....
I have to wear one the law. I wear a 3/4 cause wind bothers my ear on 1/2 helmet there are hundreds to choose from that is one thing I will not buy online you have to be comfortable and everyone is different \\;
Thanks for all of the feedback. This is the signs of me getting _soft_. I did a cross country trip on my Sportster, in April from TX to WI & MI. No helmet, solid struts, and just my army ruck sack.
I just cannot safely see over 70 and I really like driving over 70.
Around town, I use a DOT skid lid (Pick your poison)
On the road, I have the HJC JetII with a smoked face shield. As long as I have the windshield on, I can flip up the facepiece when the sun sets so I dont have to change to clear. If I dont have the windshield on, the basket squeals like a stuffed pig with the facepiece up.
I cant believe I stooped so low to respond to a helmet thread.
Someone shoot me
