Default Breakin' in a New Bobber

This is my first bike right outta the crate. Any tips/suggestions on the break-in period? The MoCo owner's manual just says no prolonged/sustained rpms and stay below 3000 for 500 miles. Is that it? THANKS!

Pics when I get 'em...

First off, Howdy, welcome to the forum. Second, there are going to be serveral different ideas about to break in a new Harley. When I got mine, I just followed the manual, worked for me. Enjoy the ride.

Interesting read...of course..I'm going to have to call bravo sierra...who do I trust?...a guy who wrote an article or a company that's been building engines for over 100 years. I broke mine in just like the manual said (not only for this bike...but every other bike and car I've ever owned), and I've never had engine problems period.
Just take it easy for the first 500 and you'll be fine!

Broke my Dyna in by the book: no problems.
Broke my RG in with hard acceleration - hard deceleration: no problems.
Broke my 98" in by not exceeding 4000 rpm and running it hard between 2500 rpm to 4000 rpm for the first 50 miles then riding normaly but not exceeding 4000 until 500 miles: no problems.

Folks, it's a Harley not a cream puff. As somebody said in their sig, "Ride it like you stole it!"

When my DXI was new, I broke it in by the book - it used a fair amount of oil up to the 1st service, and carried on doing so up to 2000 miles when I had the 95 kit installed (new bores/pistons etc). After this, I broke it in as per Motoman's* methods and in the 1500 miles I've done since, the bike's used no oil at all - and it runs much smoother too.

*This is also what the mechs at me dealer say to do. Don't *****-foot around with it - just make sure the motor's warm, find a good long downhill stretch of road, get the motor to 2500rpm or so then, in 3rd gear open the throttle WIDE and accelerate up to at least 5000rpm (no need to rev it much higher) then shut the throttle, letting the bike coast under its own momentum until the rpm's get down to just above idle. Repeat this a few times in 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears.

Having broken engines in both ways over the last 25 years, I'll do the Motoman way every time. It works.
