Did you try the special Wet or dry microfilm sand paper that Scale modlers and body shops use? this is the kind to get if you go the sanding route. I had a scratched place on the back of my fender. I cleaned the area around the scratches with rubbing alcohol, let it dry and then sprayed flat black paint on a small area of a cotton cloth and rubbed it in the scratches while the paint was still wet. Let that dry and did the rub it in wet treatment again. I then used the microfilm paper at 1200 grit, dry, mounted on a small concurve sanding block that I use on my scale model kits to lightly smooth. This worked for me and filled up the scratches. The flat paint blended in very well. You really have to look close to notice anything. I used good old rustoleum paint. I'm not recommending anyone try this just because I'm satisfied with the result. What worked for one person may not work for another. Opinions on what is best is like A--Holes, everyone has one.
