Default Lowered bike- Can I get an accurate oil reading?

Put 11" Progressive shocks on my 07 street bob.&nbsp\\; Checked the oil when the engine was cold and it was over the fill mark on it! Is the&nbsp\\;lower height of the&nbsp\\;bike throwing off my oil reading?&nbsp\\;

Unless you you have greatly changed the angle it sits at when checking the oil, I cannot imagine how it would affect the reading. Are you checking with the bike straight up or on the jiffy stand?

You should read your oil on a level surface, with the bike on the jiffy stand, and more importantly, with the engine at operating temperature. That allows some of the oil to coat all surfaces, you'd be surprised how much of it stays on the nooks and crannies of you engine.

I'm measuring it on a level surface on the jiffy stand.&nbsp\\; I'll get it up to operating temp. to get a&nbsp\\; more accurate reading.&nbsp\\; The reason my question came up is I notice a significant amount of oil coming from the crankcase breathers. I decided to check the oil cold and it was high.&nbsp\\; Wasn't sure if the little bit of height difference threw the reading&nbsp\\;off on&nbsp\\;the dipstick.&nbsp\\; If not, I might have a little too much oil in there, thus explaining&nbsp\\;why a&nbsp\\;noticable amount&nbsp\\;of oil is blowing out of the breathers.

Ok, that changes everything. Were you having this oil blowby problem before? if that,s the case, when was your last oil change, and was it done at the Dealership. It is very common to hear that they put too much oil in. The manual calls for 3 quarts if you rebuild, that means, with a bone dry engine. If you are just changing your oil, 2.6 quarts is the recommended amount. The solution is simple enough. Just warm up your engine, then meassure, the take out some. A turkey baster works great to remove a small amount at a time.
