Since this is my first bike in 30 years, what do you guys do about insurance? Use regular car insurance guys or is it better to go thru someone else?
Thanks
TL
Howdy! Insurance is one topic I can speak intelligently on. I am a P&C agent. Depending on who your car insurance is thru, they can usually help you with a motorcycle. I would suggest shopping around if you are thru a direct writer. An independant agent has more options. You just want to make sure your carrier can cover custome parts & accessories. If not you will only be paid actual cash value for a stock bike in the event of a loss and would lose any upgrade you have done to the bike. If you have any specific questions I would be happy to answer them.
I went through HD's insurance service and got a rate half of what my car insurer (USAA) quoted. My policy is with Foremost and provides coverage for accessories and my helmet. HD will get three quotes for you for free, might be worth checking out.
I went to my car insurance man and he wanted to charge me a little over $1200 a year. After I got up off of the floor, I walked out the door. I then checked the HD website. They use Progressive and they gave me a quote that was about 1/3 the cost of my car insurance. When I get my ride, that is who I plan on talking to.
I tried to go through my car insurance (Hartford via AARP) but they don't offer motorcycle insurance in my state and they suggested Foremost. I got several quotes. Tried to switch both my car and bike over to State Farm (this is their home and they own half the town and give excellent service) They were cheap on the bike, but almost twice as much on the cars. Geico was the cheapest. Progressive was a close second, Finally decided on going through Dairyland, through Shelter, just so that I could have an agent in town I could see in person. Not too much more cost, better coverage and larger allowances for add-ons.
Off-topic, but if any of you "living room musicians", (i.e., don't get paid for playing) are interested, State Farm has a killer rider for musical instruments at very cheap!
Covers my guitars at replacement value, even if I accidentally step on them or drop them!
Thanks all,
I did call HD on the advice of my agent (Nationwide) and they were half what he had to charge so i went with the Harley (Progressive)thing.
talk about something that would be good for a group buy.....
check out www.bike-line.com for insurance . I'm in NY 36 no tickets ,and I insured my 05 FXD for $540 a year vs HD insurance through Progressive at $1175 for same coverage.
