I'm new to your site as well as the Harley world and I'm loving every minute of it! I've found a ton of great information on here already but I have a question for you all...I bought a Vivid Fat Bob a few months ago and since I live in the great smog state of California, it has all the smog equipment...including a catalytic converter. I like the stock pipes, but I love the look of the black ceramic coated Vance&Hines short shots. My questions are these:
1. "Does California smog motorcycles like they do cars?"
2. "Can I change from my stock pipes w/ a cat to a pair of V&H's pipes that don't have a cat?"
3. "If I go cat-less, will that affect my engine performance or EFI mapping?"
4. "What do you guys think?"
1 - No
2 - Yes - AFAIK, the stock pipes don't have a cat
3 - If your planning on changing the pipes, I'd go all the way with a Stage 1 (A/C and map upgrade)
4 - Go for it
PS - my charcoal canister fell off - looks a lot better ;-)
+1 with rhino, but I thought I heard somewhere that the stock pipes hava a cat in them. Shows what I know...and oh yeah, go for it. And welcome to the board!!
Thanks for the help. I really wasn't sure and I didn't feel like going to the dealership and asking them. I know they would only push their own products and try to steer me away from everything else. I'm definitely getting the pipes now along with a new air cleaner!
Ps...Benwiggin2, thats a beautiful ride and those are the exact pipes I want. What do you think of them? Any difference in power or performance? How about sound?

Hey Indy, thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately I had only logged a few miles before I installed. Others have noted increase in power and performance from a before and after point of view, and V & H says with a/c, pipes, and fuel pak that a few hp is guaranteed. I saw a before and after dyno run on TV with someting like a 5 hp increase. They are loud, but there is a street or quiet baffle available, something like $30.00, easy to install...
My 2 cents ..first off on my California 08 Fat Bob I decided to keep the harley dealership out of loop of all my Mods..MODS VOID THE WARRANTY, so if anything goes wrong you might be able to slap all the stock stuff back on and get it fixed under that warranty. However I did go with the stage 1 big sucker air cleaner. V/H big shots staggered mufflers (no cat) and a V/H Fuel pack. Awesome decision I love it ..However it was to loud. So just recently I put the Queit baffles in and love the sound even better.. remember that any slip ons or changes on that california model you need to remap. They run very Lean stock. I bought everything I have off e-bay..on E-bay you pay No TAXes. it saved me a ton of money doing it this way.everthing was under $800.00 brand new.

A stage 1 (V&H pipes, A/C, and remapping) will not void the warranty. I let my dealership do my stage 1 mainly so it is covered under warranty and they can't say I did anything. Also with a stage 1 they will put your bike on a dyno so you can see what kind of HP/TQ gains you get. Well at least mine did.
I live in the sf bay area.. there are two dealerships on the pennisula. they claim even if they do the pipes and Mods (after market items..not harley items) that it will void the warranty..I went as far as calling customer care in wisconsin. they also claim that after market mods void the warranty.
