Default Knurled? What does that mean?

I'm in the process of shopping for a new set of apes for my 08' Street Bob. I noticed some bars come "knurled" and some don't. What does that mean? Are they're more benefits to buying the bars "knurled"? Not sure what that is. Sorry for the dumb question. Thanks.

Its the "crosshatch" in the clamp area. When something is knurled, the surface is raised to provide a tighter fit. Its a good thing, I would prefer the knurled bars..

It is a criss cross patern in the metal to give it a grip. It's kind of like a raised fishnet pattern in the metal. Some grips and pegs come this way. The part on the bars is usually knurled so that the bars don't slip or move after clamped into position.
Hope everyone agrees with my explanation and I hope it helps you understand your question.

Knurling is a manufacturing process, typically conducted on a lathe, whereby a visually-attractive diamond-shaped (criss-cross) pattern is cut or rolled into metal. This pattern allows for a better grip on the knurled object than would be provided by the originally-smooth metal surface. Occasionally, the knurled pattern is a series of straight ridges or a helix of "straight" ridges rather than the more-usual criss-cross pattern.

If you get a set of bars that aren't knurled, take a sharp center punch and use it to put a load of dimples wherever the bars will contact the risers. Doesn't take a heavy hit (you'll deform the bars from round to oval!); all you're doing is putting a small dimple that will have raised edges and help the risers clamp them better.

Seriously, thanks for the replies. I had no idea what it meant and now I know exactly what knurled means. I appreciate it!
