I have a 2007 bob. Today I noticed that brake fluid is leaking past the rubber gasket that is between the cover and the resevoir. Has anyone experienced this problem?
I removed the cover and cleaned the cover, wiped off the fluid from the rubber gasket and the surface around the resevoir. I then re-installed, checked it by appling the front brake and it continues to slowly leak past the gasket.
I guess I will have to replace the rubber gasket (boot).
Yep I had the same problem. I bought a new gasket and lid (the dealer didn't have any gaskets seperately so I had to buy the whole package). Anyways it still leaked after I tightened it down even with the new gasket and lid.
I finally figured out the secret is to not tighten it down too hard or it will squash the gasket and cause it to leak. I loosened it up some to where the gasket wasn't being squished out on the sides and it hasn't leaked in over a month now. It doesn't take much torque on the screws holding the lid down.
yep i replaced cover gaskit first yr i had it on my dollor thinking i damaged it somehow.then yr later same deal.then after reading the forum here there was lot of em leaking and getting replaced by the dealer. 2 weeks left of warranty had headlite bucket replaced for 2nd time mentioned the cover and guess they didnt wanna fix it for me so they told me it was loose and cranked the snot out of it like that was the cure.big deal i thought they just seen the last of me after pulling that one and it still seeps should quit someday resevoir cant be more then halffull by now.
Also, it's not the squeezing of the lever that makes it leak, it is the level of the fluid tipping or sloshing over the gasket seal inside when the reservoir is not level. Squeezing the lever doesn't generate any pressure inside that reservoir, in fact you can do it with the cover removed and the brakes still work.
Bluebob,
When my bike is parked and the bars are turned to the left full lock, my resevoir is level and when I apply the brake sitting there that is when I see the fluid leak past the gasket. So, there isn't any fluid sloshing around.
There is pressure when the cap is on and applying the brake.
I've dealt with my local dealer about that. The leaking is due to the corrosive nature of DOT 4 brake fluid. Downside is that you can't just switch to DOT 5 because they warned me that even with the littlest dot 4 residue in the brake system would cause a problem with the two types mixing. Of course they suggested having to buy a whole new brake system to switch to dot 5. I know it's posssible they just want to make some money. I've heard they're supposed to have some warranty replacement part but when I inquired, they said it's the identical master cylinder cover and gasket that will get eaten up in a few months. I said ok so what happens after the warranty runs out? I'm stuck buying gaskets and covers every few months for whatever the cost is? I don't think so.
