That makes sense ... so the more you tweak your bike for performance the worse mileage you will get! Hmmmm interesting. I'm happy with my performance AND mileage. Think I'll keep it set up just the way it is!!! Thanks for the insight!
Dyno tuners also tweak the timing advance curve to get every ounce of power out of your bike. This is all worth keeping in mind, but if your mileage sucks a lot worse that you think it should, I'd advise that you look into it.
Keep in mind that mileage is worse around town, it's worse if you're heavy on the throttle, it's worse if you're carrying a heavy load, and it's worse if your tires are under inflated. I'm not sure if windscreens make MPG worse or better. I could see it going either way.
better the octane but i would still have it check. i have a p.c. 3 slip on's and air and cams and i'm still getting in the high 40's.some times it's better to find a good indy shop for your dial in . it seem's like at the dealer it a two or three trip deal and it should'nt be .

I would think a good windscreen on a Harley would make the mileage worse. It's a big mostly flat shield ... it's not streamline like the fairing on a sport bike.
It's been a long while since I last posted but though I contribute my $0.02.
I'm running a reliable 42-46 MPG on my hot-rodded '04. I generally get about 2 MPG less when riding 2-up. This is calculated across several thousand miles this summer with a 95", SE-251, 100+ HP engine build. I generally run 91-93 non-ox gas. I've also worked extensively on the engine tune and am running a bit on the rich side to keep the tq up and temp down.
I wouldn't have suspected this good of mileage when I did my build, but again, doing the math over 3000 miles of fills during the past couple of months, these are the numbers I'm getting.
oh yeah, it is black as pitch inside the ends of my pipes, oh and I forgot to mention when I down shift it shoots flames about 2 feet long, often enough that I have to clean the carbon off the top pipe from the bottom pipe, I have a apt on Monday for a re-dyno
After Thunder Max & Big Sucker & Rush Slip-ons: 30MPG (street and highway)
I've seen these posts before and NOBODY ever has ANY suggestions on WHAT to CHECK?
Anybody know what would cause this ?
I get the same crappy milage.... would love to just get it to a reasonable level
like 36-38mpg.... I understand if I want great gas milage then I should buy a scooter,
but my gas milage should be close to other similar bikes, there should not be a 10+ mpg
difference on the SAME Year bike....
xbox have you gotten your answer?
Things to look at.
Spark Plugs, do they look black when you pull them. Check them both.
Is your Big Sucker all plugged up or does it seem clean?
Exhaust pipes are the all black inside? Wipe the inside with your finger.
Have a dyno RUN done. I see $25 specials. It shows the fuel air ratio over the different RPM's. That will tell you something.
If all the checks out it must be a severe problem in the right wrist area.
Good luck.
PS 45+ on my scoot 99 fxd , stage 1.
I am getting 46 mpg on my 02 Lowrider on the highway doing 70-75. It is stock except for cycle shack slipons. Checked it twice this summer and was the same both times.
I was getting 55 mpg when it was stock then dropped to 30 mpg after the up grades and before it was dyno tuned. After the dyno tune I'm back to 40 mpg.
