Customizing Questions
Thanks for your service and welcome back ...
I've spent a lot of time deployed at sea/overseas over the past few years, as well, and know the feeling of 'can't wait to get back!'
The MoCo sells the same forward controls as are on the Wide Glide (and now, the Fat Bob forward control option). But, don't forget there are a lot of aftermarket parts that are of excellent quality and frequently easier on the wallet.
I recommend you order or download catalogs from Custom Chrome, V-Twim Mfg, J&P Cycles, Jireh Cycles, and there are a bunch of others, as well. Get a copy of American Iron and look at the ads ... go online and find a good distributor who will take your internet or toll-free phone order. You'll definitely save some big money that way. Also, as noted, there are H-D dealers that'll discount parts ... in addition to Chicago H-D, and Zanotti Motor, there's also Surdyke.com.
The MoCo has a catalog and periodic supplements, but they don't show parts that come stock on the bikes--only accessories and upgrades. Sometimes it's hard to find part numbers for things like FXDWG triple trees, since they're not a catalog item. That's where the forum really comes in handy ....
Also, recommend you find an independent bike shop ("indy") to work on your bike if you decide to outsource the labor (instead of DIY). H-D stealership labor rates are expensive and sometimes not the most efficient at getting the job done.
I find it interesting that a lot of guys post a question on the forum that they could have pretty easily answered for themselves if they'd just cracked the cover of a catalog or service manual.
Of course, if you're looking for opinions on what works best or how something looks, etc., this is the place to ask. Also, don't forget to peruse the "under $50 thread" there's a wealth of info there ... not everyone's going to do all the low-buck mods, but some of them are pretty good (for example, tips on how to splice wiring, etc.).
Congrats on your new Harley and best of luck,
R/
Priest
p.s. don't forget to post photos!
