Default where to begin? performance mods

I've sort of reached the end of the mods in the looks department on my bike and I'm now thinking about some performance, but don't know where to look or begin. I know for sure that I am swapping out my Fuel Pack for a PCIII. I have the SE stage 1 a/c and the V&H pipes. I am looking for more low to mid range torque gains. But I am lost, engine performance parts are not my thing so I don't know where to begin. Should I stay stock displacement and do cams and some head work or should I look into a big bore kit? I am on a budget so that will limit me, but I understand it could get expensive and am willing to save if thats whats needed. Oh yeah, I've got an '06 so it's an 88. Any thoughts?

Head work is the biggest bang for your buck and combined with cams with make a big difference. You will have more horsepower than just a big bore kit.

If you're on a budget, try Woods TW6-6 cams. You'll be amazed at the difference they make on the bottom.

For low to midrange, your choice of exhaust is going to limit you a bit. What is your budget? You can do heads and cams for about 1k. BB will set you back more like 2k. A 95" will get you above 100/100. Obviously head work and cams will give you a nice bump, after that, it's up to you and your wallet. I would also strongly urge you use a pre designed kit by someone like HQ, Hillside, GMR, etc. Click on link and scroll. LOTS of choices. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/showt...t=head+porting I have personally spoken to all 3 of those, plus more. They can give you enough info to make your head swim, and all are very knowledgeable and seem to be stand up. Choose wisely, and good luck.

I have heard the same thing about the woods cam. Picking the right cam is going to make a big difference. I just went through it myself. Make sure you get one that fits your riding style, low and midrange or more top end. Take your time ask around about different cams being used and ask how they perform. Getting some good heads will bring everything together.

My question is can you pick a cam that is good for the stock heads and also would do the trick when you find money to do the heads.
Does Woods TW6-6 cams fit that bill?
Nothing worse than paying twice. Especially when you really don't have the money in the first place.

I don't know squat on the engine work subject but I've read in AIM tech articles several times that doing cams alone without any engine work is basically a waste. Perhaps what they mean is that you may see some performance gain but not realize the full potential? Enlighten me (us).
