Stopping
Dittto what everyone says..I down shift and brake depending on traffic. Coming to a stop, I always keep a good distance from the car in front and just off either side. I leave it in gear as well, In case I have to move quick.
So far, no problems. I just hate it when people have to crowd me at a light or see just how close they can get to the rear tire.

I know there have been 3 or 4 times that I have had to pull up beside the car in front of me, or pull just over the line and in front of the stopped car next to me in order to avoid being hit by the ocassional driver who is arguing on a cell phone or applying makeup in the vanity mirror. It has "always" been during commuter traffic. I always keep mine in first when I'm stopped and stay to the left or right side of the lane whichever seems to provide the most room to duck and run if someone isn't paying attention.
When in traffic I always match the speed with the right gear and always tap the brakes several times to wake up the cagers behind me. Also I never stop dead center of a car just in case a quick getaway is needed if someone is barreling up from the rear. This actually saved me and the wife one night. I slowed down with 3 cars in front of me and the lead car was awaiting traffic to clear before making a left turn. I slowed and kept to the right of my lane and was about 10 feet from the car in front of me when an S-10 came from behind and slammed into the car right in front of me. Major pucker event!!!!!!! I was almost stopped but was over on the white line to the right and it just missed us. It pushed all 3 cars about 30 yards down the road and totaled 2 of them.
Downshift only for the sake of being in the right gear for your speed. With the execption of using a lower gear when going down a hill, brakes - not the engine/gearbox - are for slowing down, unless you've got a jake brake on your bike.
And, like dfredb said, drivers behind you need the visual of the brakelight.

... I've got as much sense of humor as the next guy....
ditto...
right thumb and forefinger blip'in the throttle as I down shift, the other fingers on my right hand are feathering the front brake (foot on rear brake as well)... downshifting to 2nd. Depending on traffic then, I'll hold the clutch from 2nd to a dead stop, selecting 1st at the last point before I put my foot down.

+1 on Archergodwin. I also installed Kuryakin Panacea lights on the back- when I hit the brakes, the turn signals and brake light flash 5 times. LED lights are brighter too. Improves my sense of security after being rear ended at a stop light in a friend's Volvo by a utility repair truck. Car totalled, people sent to hospital..... I do everything I can to get the attention of anyone behind me! Jay
