gerbing temp controller
I just bought a set of Gerbig heated gloves and an on/off switch. I wanted the temp controller but it is $69. Seems like a lot of money for temp controller. Has anyone made there own controller? There's got to be something at Radio Shack that can be rigged to work.

I bought a pair of Gerbing gauntlet gloves, controller, and a jacket liner last spring. They are still in the package as it hasn't been cool enough here yet. I know the controller is expensive. If I personally put together the parts to make a controller, probably a rheostat in real life, I would be afraid of burning out the heated clothing. Then you are out your bucks for sure. Just my .02
The package stays cool, so I expect they're pulsing the power, probably varying the pulses depending on where the control **** is set. Just guessing from its behavior, I'd say it's using some kind of triac or scr circuit to control the bulk of the power -- they have to handle many amps, so you don't want to just throw a variable resistor at it. You could probably knock a controller together for a few bucks if you're handy, but I'm not sure it's worth it to reverse-engineer the system. (Well, I am sure for me -- I bought the controller. I just want it to work, I don't want to dink with it out in the cold.)
+1, what he said!!! Of course I'm running the jacket and gloves tho. I likes to be semi toasty when it's 30 and below out.
I hear ya. Did a little research and it's a little more complicated than it seems. I'm gonna give it a shot with just the on/off switch. If I'm not satisfied with it I'll spring for the controller. Probably the dual controller, in case I decide to add to it.
