I have a 2000 superglide and want to put progressive springs in the fork tubes. I know I have to cut PCV 1'' pipes to pre-load the unit. I was advised to allow 1/4" above the top rim of the shock, for mild,1/2'' for all around ridding and 1" for serious ridding. Does this sound right. Next question, does the weight have to be off the front end to do this change. Any help will be greatly appreicated.
Yes, get full extension on the forks. Weight off the front end. Cover the tank and fender and in hindsight I would spray some WD40 or its equivalent on the the fork cap nuts. Those buggers are on there tight. I've used 10w Belray Fork oil and now I'm thinking about going up to 15w. Good luck.
be careful on those 39mm forks... the cap preloads them so don't let it shoot of the top when you come undone...
also I have progressive in my ride and the 39mm stock with some Screamin Eagle oil felt better to me(well really about the same).
guess what I am sayin is change the oil first then if you still want something different ... get the springs.
I installed a set of Progressive Low Rider springs in my Wide Glide. It came with all required parts: No need to cut PVC pipe. I'm very pleased with the result.
