Default Need some tips

Tomorrow my buddy is going to look at a 1998 Wide Glide, and I'll be going with him. I've never owned a Dyna model, and I've never owned an EVO motor. What kind of stuff do you recommend we look for when looking at it?

Have a look at the front corners of the front jug where it meets the top of the case. Not sure what causes it, but sometimes there will be carosion there that will eat away at the top of the mating surface on the case. It might show some seepage of oil. If so, it probably is too late to save. Otherwise, evo engines are designed for 100K miles. Blowby from below the pistons is routed through some hollow bolts that hold the air cleaner assembly to the heads so it is not surprising to find oil in the air cleaner. However, if there is oil dripping from the air cleaner it either has not been cleaned lately or has excessive blowby. Reach down and feel of the bolts that hold the rear belt pully to the hub. Check to see if they are lose or seem torqued out of line. Under certain circumstances the bolts will snap off flush with the rear hub. Better to have and aftermarket steel rear hub with nuts on the backside of the bolts.

Take it for a ride, then look for any leaks when you are done .The ride should tell you if there are any other problems..Find a steep hill ,stop in the middle, test out the clutch.

take a look at rear jug where it mates with case on shift side when parked if oil coming from it could use a new set of base gaskits but it most likely can be ridden for quite awhile if it isnt real bad. They are a good motor nothing to be really concerned about.

How many miles on it ? The Evo motor is a good engine and easy to work on. I will suggest that you or your friend should ride the bike at least 20 miles to get the motor good and warmed up. Then pull over and shut it off for a few minutes and then crank it back up. Listen for any abnormal sounds, see if it cranks right up again with no problems etc.I put alot a miles on a Evo motor back in the late 80s and the motor performed well with little trouble. The later model Evos such as you are looking at are supposed to be even better than the earlier model Evos....Good luck.
