Definately look at the Street Bobs if you can swing the extra cash. I've got forward controls on mine and love it and I'm only 5'10 so you should really love them. The only thing is if you plan on having a passenger you are gonna have to get a passenger seat and pegs but since my wife won't ride then I'm always solo. It has saved me a few times from having to give the ugly girls in the group rides too.
Grab the seat and detatchable windshield on Ebay. That stuff comes up frequently and you will pay less than 50 cents on the dollar that the dealer will do ya for.
Go for an FXDC. I've had my 2007 FXDC since April 2007, have put 12,500 miles on it, and love it. My only suggestions are that before you take delivery; (a) get forward controls installed - mid controls are cramped for anyone over 5'6" tall - get mini apes installed if you like those kind of bars. When you get the bike home, you can do the pipes and A/C and fuel management system yourself at your leisure. The Stage 1 upgrades really perk up the FXDC in 4th, 5th and 6th gears to a noticeable degree.
I have a 2009 Super Glide Custom. Great bike. And it looks really sharp, too! I think the forward controls are a must. Other than that, the bike is ready to rock and roll. It handles great and more than enough power for me.

I don't plan on making any mods to the engine. I've been riding an 883 Sportster for the past 2 years and never once felt like I needed a bike with more power. So even in bone-stock form, the 96 inch motor with all its torque is probably going to feel like a rocket ship to me.

The only thing turning me away from the Custom or the Street Bob is the spoked wheels. I don't know why, because every bike I had back in the 70s and 80s had spoked wheels. I just feel "safer" knowing I'm riding on two big hunks of aluminum and tubeless tires. Should I feel this way, or am I just being silly?
