This lift is a lot of $$ but I was thinking like you, it wouldn't be a waste. Thanks for the imput.
Quality remains long after the price is forgotten. By good tools and enjoy your work. Dropping a bike once could cost far more than the price of a jack. Being able to roll a bike anywhere in the shop while up on the jack is great. 4 composite casters make it easy.
I also use the Sears jack, cost me 70 bucks a few years ago and I have used it many many times and it works fine. I also bought the 4 rubber adapters from the stealer but I did use a couple short pieces of 2x4 until i bought the adapter kit. I don't roll my bike around the garage on a lift, never really had the need to do that. mojo
The type of jack I have always used is certainly not a floor jack, but rather a stand made out of 1 1/2 inch steel pipe. You can easily make one yourself, cover it with firehose to protect the paint. One simple pull on the handle and either the front or rear wheel is well off the ground depending on where you position the jackstand. You can view mine at......... http://area51.tzo.com/bperry/gallery Click on my Dyna folder and it is a few photos from the front of the album.
I have used these since seeing my first one in 1958. I never see anyone using this type of stand nowadays. Seems like everyone just wants to buy a lift or hydraulic unit. The only reason I can understand using a hydraulic unit is a desire to elevate the entire bike in the air so that you can work on it while standing. For that I would use an in ground air lift, available for around $650 and you do the install. The jackstand serves any lift requirement I have ever been faced with, it's simple and cheap to weld up quickly.......piniongear
