Default FXD Fuel Tank Top Plate Question

Expecting to change my tank and fenders in the next few days and am trying to get my ducks in a row.

Is the top fuel plate seal reusable or should it be replaced?

Thanks,

John

I reused mine. No problems, yet. I'm sure there pretty cheap though.

reused mine as well. no problems.
I think HD recommends that you replace the screws which have a special integrated seal built in. If you're going to get leakage - it will probably be at one of the screws.

I think the book also calls for replacing the gasket (seal) too.

Its kinda like the derby cover gasket. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you dont.

I say screw it, live dangerously.
If you cant live life on the edge, you aint having any fun

John, I've had mine off 8-10 times.
Haven't replaced the seal (about 80 bux)

I replace the screws every time (about a buck and a quarter each)

Have a look at the link below

I did a short write up

Mud,
I wouldnt have a problem with John using the same seal on the same tank, but I think he's looking at replacing the tank when he gets it painted.
I'm guessing it wont be a problem if you've reused yours after you beat the sides in on yours. If theres any distortion, it would have showed.
You've stressed your tank way beyond the factory stamping, so your opinion is probably the most valued

Thanks a lot guys. I called the dealer to see if they had one in stock. They have it and it cost $40.00. That is what prompted this post.

I never even thought about the screws. Guess I better read the manual if I really want to have my ducks in a row.

Thanks again.

I've had mine apart twice and reused the gasket and the bolts...no problems yet.

My gasket looks different...see my How-To on swapping the tank guts.
