It's only because the Mrs. and I took one for a demo ride while I was home on vacation. We rode my bike to the shop and it was a bit cool out. When we got on the Street Glide I was amazed at how much the Fairing cut down on the wind and when I turned on the radio, it came in so clear and loud, it kind of startled me....lol The Mrs. and I could have a conversation without raising our voices and the ride was much better than I had expected it to be. My wife did tell me that my bike with the Low Rider seat and the detachable backrest was just as comfortable, so that made me feel good.
I dont know jake, It would hard to make that street glide look as cool as your low rider, but comfort does have its price. As far as spending on mods goes, I also echo many of the above statements about family and shelter issues. When it rains or snows the hog is not the best place to cozy up in. The guy that I bought the bike from actually asked my wife(with out me knowing) If he could sell it to me;-) Then when I started changing it around he was always asking me if the wife was ok with it, I guess that his mods were not welcome in his house. The most expensive mod that I have done was to have the top end Heads, Gear Cams, bored cylinders, and that is being done now. I have have read so many posts about the wide tires and the sacrifices in terms of rideablility that have to be made. It just seems that there are alot of other places to spend 5 Gs on your ride, just my .02
The way I look at it is that when the mods are done it will be time to go to a different model. The way I put miles on a bike its no garage queen. I enjoy each change I make rack up the miles and before you know it will be time for another. Road Glide in Orange will be in my future(hopefully the SE110 issues resolved) and by then I will have slowed down a bit. The big 50 next year. The mods done on the bikes is part and parcel of HD ownership.
ahh man... all these guys want a fatty tire on the bakc of their bikes cause it looks cool... ride one man... for a while ride one, i have had the 300's 240's (not to bad) and now i have a 180 for a reason.... i like to turn and be able to get out of the way when i need to... have fun on your on ramps and off ramps on the high way slowing down to like 15 MPH to get off... ahhh man... if you are doing the work yourself it is really not that $$$ about 1-2 G's if your pay to have it done... you are looking around 4-5g's

Does that help you decide what you want to do?????
Naaa, I know what *I'm* gonna do. The only question in the post was 'Whats too much for YOU?'. For some its a little. For some its the sky's the limit.
I go back and forth a bit cuz it IS a lotta money, and No youre not gonna get most of it back when / if you sell. But the bike's almost paid off (paid it off in under a year I might add) so the money's not THAT big an issue. Ahh well, after its all the way paid off, I'll either do it or I wont. We'll see!
I think I'm done for awhile. I have a decent job with overtime out the a$$ and thats the only reason I spent $4k on the wheel package. If I didn't have the overtime I don't think I would have spent as much as I did. I think if all of your bases are covered and you have the cash why not? If your like me and alot of others I don't think of the trade in value or the resale value because my bike isn't going anywhere.
My cut off is when you get to the point where you could buy a nice used bike for the same money, that's where it gets difficult to justify to me.For example before I'd spend 4K on the motor for my bobber I'd buy a used bandit or ZRX and call it a day.

Thats a great point!...But I feel you are gonna hurt alot of feelings here.
For me it would be a used sv650 for under 3k. That would be a great "mod" that would give my dyna more available down time for cheaper mods.
like joe says looks great on the bike, but handles in tight spot like crap.i buddy has a 240 on his sloptail and i love the look, but dont like the handling. jackyl
