Honestly if you use a tool like what mud, hog and I have whipped up then you should be fine. It's not like you need to be with in microns and I can get it with in a 1/64" with my tool pretty easily.

Save you self $30 and build one.

red, what year are later model Dynas??

Original posting didn't specify year.

Gotta picture of the tool that eliminates the so called guesswork??

??? You're losing me when you say *It would really be nice if the axle had the same size hole in it as the swingarm* ???

I don't have a picture but its in the 2008 dyna shop manual. I can describe it picture two plugs that you insert in the holes in each end of the axle and these plugs have holes in them similar in size to the alignment holes in the swingarm. So you wind up using a tool or coathanger that has a hook on each end. I don't why Harley just can't move into the 21st century and design an alignment system built into the swingarm like the rest of the world's motorcycle makers ? Or is it that Harley really likes making everything difficult so you are forced to take your bike to the dealer ?

Yep... bent piece of brazing rod and a zip-tie... works like a charm.

You don't need a bent piece of rod. I came across another post on the forum here (and I don't remember who to give credit where it's due) but he said, and it's correct:

The right side flanged nut is the same diameter as the left side nut (not the washer though). You can then do a straight measurement to be holes. And it works.

Yes you can just measure the distance. The bent rod is a lot faster, for me any way.
I used a coat hanger and o ring. Takes every bit iffy 5 minutes to make. LOL

How much belt tension? I'm about to do this very same thing after having my rear wheel taken off and ready to go back on. Already have the tool made.

10lbs should give you about 3/8" deflection... as measured on the jiffy stand.

The service manual describes, and has a picture of the bent rod, by the way... as for measuring from the nuts, I would not recommend that... you would have to make sure you're either on the flat, or not on the flat of the nut... which is it?.... just use a bent rod, with a 'relative indicator'... works like a champ... has worked for me dozen's of times.
