Many windshields and fairings use a vent - in the windshield itself - and what this does is create a "laminar flow" on the back of the windshield. What this actually does is pull air up the inside of the windshield and up and over your head.
Also, with just a standard windshield you get wind that buffets around the back of windshield. Think of the wing on automobiles creating a low pressure area behind the car, reducing drag and providing down force. The windshield vent provides no down force, but does create a low pressure area behind the windscreen.
The one I'm familiar with is the Rifle unit. And best yet, it works. I can ride with my face shield up at 60 mph without buffeting. Considering I'm running a sport fairing with only a 15" screen, I'd say that's pretty good.
