you will get used to it. started on a bike with mids and switched to forwards. then I got a stage 2 big *** air cleaner that seems to want to sit on my knee. I got used to it quik. plus I will never go back to mids. the forwards are so much more comfortable on long rides
Had this same exact problem with the SE AC for the 08's & up... The best options are to go with an SE Heavy Breather (cha ching!!!), a SE AC for the 07 & older dynas (about $120 + small ROUND cover) or, like I did, get an Arlen Ness Big Sucker ($150 with cover). My knee no longer hits the AC and I hit the brake pedal with no funky foot twisting. Basiclly, the SE AC with the football or snail cover stick out far enough that riders with shorter legs have a tough time reaching the rear brake pedal.
Good luck...
I installed the H-D fwds on my 2009 Street Bob and had the same problem you described until I installed the Screamin' Eagle Heavy Breather air cleaner. Now my knee is just below the air cleaner assembly. However, you either love or hate the look of the exposed K&N filter element. My SB has the vivid black paint job, so the gloss black air intake on the Heavy Breather looks good against the flat black engine and vivid black tank.
Ok the whole story, taking a hard right at a stop I layed the thing down (laugh till it happens to you) and bent the break in a little. I took the lever off, put it in a vice, heated it up and bent it back a little past center. Probably not much an inch maybe. Works, more of my foot's on the pad. Bike's in storage I'll get a pic once it warms up.
A side note, turning hard to the right at low or no speed is not cool on a dyna. I found out fast how top heavy the thing really is. Turning to the left doesn't seem as bad for some reason. Go figure.
Run an open air cleaner set up and get rid of the football, just buy a cover of your choice, let that be your first step then try it out. Worse comes to worse you get mid contrlos back and a set of highway pegs.
