I am thinking of buyin' some 14 or 16" apes for my 2005 Superglide and i am not sure what length cables i will need. I don't live near a dealer to take to them to measure the length of the cables i would need and i don't know how well i could do it myself. I just don't wanna go through the problem of getting wrong cables, having to take them back, etc.
Could anyone that has put these bars on a similiar bike tell me what length cables i would need. I am guessing i would need throttle, idle, clutch cables, and brake line.... is that right??
Since different mfrs. of handlebars have different height, pullback, center width, & overall widths I suggest you get 6' of solid electrical wire (has some stiffness) & measure them out yourself.
Do the mock-up with the wire then you'll be sure of the lengths rather than being dependent on someone else that might give you incorrect info.
I'm not sure of the size of the stock mini apes from an 05 FXDWG I put on my 05 FXDI but, all that was needed was a different brake line. I reused all the other cables. Had to get clever but, it can be done. Good luck.
Go to the Harley parts site and enter throttle cable into the search box. It will bring up a list of items. Select the Diamondback Multi-Length for Dyna/FXR: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US
After the item description there is a link called "How to Select the Correct Cable Kit" Click on it and it takes you to a table: http://www.harley-davidson.com/pna/p...bmLocale=en_US
Look up a Dyna SuperGlide 2005 and you will find the stock length for both throttle and idle.
Back to the search box; now enter Clutch cable. It will load a list of items. Select the Stainless Steel Braided Clutch Cable for Dyna/FXR: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US
Look for the same "How to Select the Correct Cable Kit" after the item description. Click on it: http://www.harley-davidson.com/pna/p...bmLocale=en_US
Look up your bike and you will find the stock total length and the length for just the top half and bottom half)
For the brake line, I was not able to get a stock length off of the website, but measured mine and added extra length based on the difference in bar height. I can tell you that stock Street Bob bars have 10.25" of rise. This is off of a similar HD web page, but I cannot find it now. A lot of people call them 12" mini apes, but they are not 12". I went from stock to 12.5" Wild Ones, and they are 2.25" taller. Good luck!
