I just installed Roland Sands Design Vintage apes and Love em! I thought the stock Street Bob apes were very comfy also. I've always had back aches from random sitting.....car/plane/etc. I've never felt ANY pain with apes. Actually, my stock mini-apes are for sale......dirt cheap.
The truth is you have to find what your comfortable with, or what your willing to put up with.
I have had apes on 3 of my last 4 bikes. I find them comfortable, but if you go to extremes you will have numb hands, that all depends on you, your size and circulation.
I do like the look, of the fat bob bars, but not sold on them yet, I just put my 13 inchers on I found the stock 10's a bit short and narrow, but everyone's different.
Bottom line, below the shoulders i find it very comfortable, but everyone's different...
my stock mini apes hurt my back i pulled them towards me and forwards and couldnt get them right so i went higher to straigten my back out and i love my 16" chubbies.. my hands dont bother me neither does my back....now i just have to find the right seat for long rides.
I have the stock mini apes on my 07 SB...very comfortable...with the SDer seat my hands are slightly below shoulder height....can I install 2" risers with stock wiring/cabeling without trouble?...:>)
Yes, you can install 2" risers without having to replace or modify any cables or wiring. On the '07 it's a no brainer... on the '08 and '09 you have to purchase risers that have been made specifically for '08 and later (these might be hard to find so PM if interested) and an extra set of hands makes the install go so much easier, although doing it solo is not a major issue. I did mine by myself and had no problems.
Love mine, this is on a 1500 mile trip to Florida and back in 5 days with 2 days off the bike!
Love this stuff!!!
With a name like TimBone, what the hell is trying to poke out of your shirt?
Your a little too excited about the apes, but they look good!
(you have to go back and check the pic!)
Ever since I got my apes I don't get a sore back or wrists like I used to get with the stock bars. I find them very comfortable, and have yet to get numb hands.
To me the biggest difficulty I had with apes was aggressive cornering and high speed maneuvering. The apes were comfortable, but, I so prefer the low bars I have now when it comes to maneuverability.(this may be just because I have been riding with low rise bars for 21 years.)
Apparently the majority of people who responded love their apes. Personally I like the drag bars that come stock on the Fatbob. It seems to me you'd have to hold on for dear life at highway speeds with apes and I do a lot of highway driving. But I've never tried them so can't say from experience.
Maybe someday I'll give them a try. (Perhaps I'll take a used Wideglide for a test ride at my local used bike dealership this spring ... tell him i'm interested in a 2nd bike! ;-)
