I have 13's with lower shocks set up. Very comfortable even on long rides. Throttle hand went numb on the highway a few times so I purchased a throttle rocker ( $9.95 ) and problem solved. If you have back problems mini apes or even 13" to 14" apes could be a solution.
I can't imagine not having Apes, at 6'1" with monkey arms I have them pushed forward a bit and find the ride extremely comfortable, especially long highway rides.
The stock mini apes weren't nearly as comfortable for me as my Wild1 12" Apes.
I had my worries about getting apes some time ago. I remember having shoulder problems while ridding, I just figured it was due to an old shoulder injury. Then I would move to a different pos to relieve the shoulder pain and then some time later my back would get sore! I guy on here talked about a bad shoulder problem he had and he was wondering what to do to help it or he would have to sell the bike. Well he installed a set of apes and never looked back. Said the pain was gone, felt great! So I tried it, guess what. The shoulder pain is just about all gone when riding long rides. After several hours it will let me know it is still there, but nothing like before. So, Apes for me!
For those who are wondering about the wind in the chest at 70miles per hour, well I throw on a windshield, and that takes care of that. Just a thought on that.
Good luck!
I dunno...anyone else think the FXDF drag bars are the best thing since sliced bread?
It's one of the big factors that drew me to the look of the bike and I love the way it fits on the ride. Different strokes. Some people think the Apes look cool, but I think they just look wretched.
Every bike I have had has had apes of some sort (except the sport bikes). Evey time I change bars I go higher.
As for feeling like a kite on the highway...I have a National Cycle Fly Screen on that is angled just right to keep the wind off my chest. I do feel the wind in my face but don't mind that at all. I can cruise along at 70-90 mph without feeling like I am going to be blown away.
I've got 14" total rise and love them. This is my first bike and the stock lowrider bars are the only think I have to comapre the apes to. But I can tell ya that my apes sit about 1/2"-1" higher than my shoulders and I have no probs with circulation. No back probs either. I do feel like a parachute at speeds over 70 mph....but like stated earlier...thats the price of cool, lol!
