Yeah; the next logical $tep i$ going to co$t a bit...the ideal cams with no headwork will probably have to be changed after headwork; as Last Saint said - make sure the components are designed to work together; then you'll have more return for your performance dollar...you also should have an idea of what your performance goal is.
I saved $ and shopped for parts for 2 years then did it all at once, but I knew what I wanted and stayed focused.

It seems like the general consensus is that more performance means more power.
Considering the bike, I would invest in suspension stuff before worrying about making it faster. Better rear shocks, front suspension, stabilizer, Superbrace, and brakes.
Then more power.
However, I suppose it does depend on how and where you ride.
