Default Thinking of engine mods...

Okay, so I've been doing some searching for cams for my FB Lo. Not 100% sure what I'm going to go with yet, but either way, I have to change the cams. To all you engine modding guys out there, how big of a job is this. I am a mechanic, just not a motorcycle mechanic, so not sure if I should try this on my own or just go ahead and pay someone else to do it. Can you remove and install the cams without actually pulling the engine or does the whole thing have to come out? Also, anyone with experience in changing cams, would just changing cams give me good results without doing any other internal engine mods? I've got Rush Slip-ons and going to go with a SE intake. I'm also going to have it dyno'd after the work.

Thanks....

You can do it with the bike on the side stand. It is simple. A bit time consuming but quite simple. There are a few special tools you need and can get from George's Garage. Opt for EZ install adjustable push rods if you do not want to remove the heads. There are so many cam options out there my head is spinning as I am trying to figure out what to use on my build when I get to it.

When I did my cam,s last time (s/e 203) I felt a nice bump in power. However, when I do it again it is getting a big bore and most likely the heads will get ported and polished. You might as well build it while you ahve it half way apart.

Thanks Dr. I thought I read somewhere that you can do it without removing the engine. I've looked for some sort of writeup on replacing cams, but have yet to find any. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. What cams are you thinking about using? I'm wanting a little more low-mid range "kick in the pants" type power. I don't care about top speed, as I'm not Mr. Speedy. I just want something that's going to pull hard out of the hole and cruise at 60-75 without batting an eye.

Do a search in the touring forum. I believe a guy over there had a sweet write up and pictoral on doing a cam swap.

Go to the Fuel Moto Site, I think its www.fuelmotousa.com
Jamie has a complete write up on cam swaps with pictures and how to. They also offer some great deals on power packages that include cams, exhaust and tuner all set up and MAPed ready to go for your bike.
