Check the fluid level or make sure you have fluid in it. To adjust the clutch make sure the the engine is at room temp (ambient temp). Go to the do it yourself section in HDF and there is a section on clutch adjustment in there or if you have a service manual use it. It's fairly easy.
Personally, I don't think it's only as simple as clutch adjustment. Should be smooth even if the clutch is out of adjustment. Sounds like a cable problem, or in the mechanism somewhere.
