Mine came with it, and I use it. My bike is garaged, but I run errands on it, dine at restaurants, drop in at watering holes, go on roadtrips, etc. In playing the odds, they swing more in your favor, the more obstacles you put in the way of opportunist scumbags. My security system is my first physical line of defense, after behavioral choices (where I go, where I park, when I go, how far I stray from the bike, etc), and before ignition/fork locks, rotor locks, chains around trees.
I'm an avid Ebay shopper, and I'm sure you could pick up a factory system for under $100. Another idea is the GPS system linked below; for when a Law Enforcement assisted theft recovery is "Plan-B"... ;>)
If mine had not come with it I doubt if I would buy it. I use an armoured cable and disk lock anyway. I would use the money to buy a new seat or something else more useful.
my ins. would cost 150$ more per year without it. I'm still sure a pro theif could take the bike in less than 30 seconds.
Also i had them install some ultra-violet tattoos , it's an added ins.which pays out 5000$ if your bike is stolen in the first 5 years. Overkill but hey!
I just had a HD security system installed on my Fat Bob. I also purchased the siren and the pager. The only reason I purchased the system was so that I would have the piece of mind knowing that there was some security when I am traveling and park the bike outside of a hotel room. I usually try to park the bike outside my hotel door, or if that is not possible, I park it in front of the hotel where the night clerk can keep an eye on it. The pager is good for 1/2 mile and lets me know if the alarm is activated. Another benefit is the $75.00 a year I save on my insurance.
I have the whole security set up on my bike and keep it garaged with chains, locks and anchor bolted to the concrete floor, HD security alarm, pager, siren, lojack, Sringfield .45cal, 12 guage Mossberg, fully insured and it's still not enough. My buddy had his fat boy stolen a few years back and i'm just paranoid. If someone really wants your scoot that bad, they are gonna take it and there's not much the cops are gonna do to help you get it back so i figure that any prevention to deter the basturds is worth spending the extra dough on, if it keeps me in the wind.
posted another thread here about the new fat bob i'm getting. here's another question. the dealer i'm dealing with has one with no security system on it. it's a $350 charge around here for it. it's the one that comes with the little key pad thing. is it worth it? it's not an alarm just a kill switch type thing from what I understand. my bike will be garage kept protected by smith & wesson. is this security system worth the money?
My last 2 bikes did not have the security system.
My latest bike has the security ( with alarm)...I'm looking forward to using it.... At a motel...at a restaurant when I can't see my bike from the window.
Maybe I'll decide it wasn't worth it...but it's worth a try.
My last two bikes were never stolen ..but even if someone touches my bike or tries to sit on it....I want the alarm to say; "Get the #$^%^ away!!!"
