When you pull the baffles out of the straight-cut muffs, here is what they look like. The heavy steel mesh you see is there to protect the fiberglass packing from the blast of the exhaust. When you remove the packing, this mesh acts like a diffuser and the resulting exhaust note is really quite nice.
I changed the loud exhaust on my 2004 to stock headpipes and found SE tapered slip-ons part #80061-00. Great sound, not too loud, good torque and I like the stock tapered look. Do a Google search with "Harley" and that part number, I think there are still sets out there, I found mine on eBay. I'm 55 years old and want to save what hearing I have left for my stereo. Good luck to the young guys cause when your ears start ringing you'll know why.
Hey MCT, I've got a set of Dyno-Power low restriction slip-ons on my 02 (been on since 03). They pretty mellow at idle, growl good when turning up the wick and settle down to to level that's low enough I can hear road noise from the tires. Bought them through JP Cycles and the price hasn't gone up much at all. They are tapered in appearance so johnny law doesn't give me a second look.
From my experience, Supertrapp is one of the very few aftermarket mufflers which can be tuned quiet. I have a 2-1 with it, ans love the sound. I had D&D Fatcat with quiet baffle, which was waaay tooo loud.
Thanks for the pics. I never knew H-D mufflers were ever 'glass packed. I thought they were all steel baffled.
Old Mike,
I'm only 48 and my ears have been ringing for years. Hearing damage is cumulative, as I am sure many of you know or are about to find out. Loud things permanently hurt your hearing for good. Once you damage those parts they stay damaged.
Thanks for the help on the other pipes. I really appreciate your comments.
