Hey guys, I am wanting to change the headlight mount to the chrome one. The stock mount comes off just fine, but the directional, Neutral, Oil Pressure light panel does not fit through the rectangular opening. I even unplugged the cord from under the tank panel and that will not pass through the opening either!
The new light shell has a peice of tape covering the cutout for the L/R lights. Removing that cover should allow the individual bulbs/sockets to be removed/installed.
When I take the headlight mount off, free from the trees (headlight also removed), I can pinch four small clips and the whole idiot light assembly can be pulled from the rectangular hole. But the assembly only comes out and up from the headlight mount. The small assembly is too big to go through the other way! I know it is something REAL STUPID that I am missing.
I have had it apart three times, on seperate days, thinking I will spot what I am doing wrong..............
I may have to ask one of the wrenches at the local shop. I can't figure this thing out!
Well, when I got rid of my brow...I took the wire out of the plastic clip. You have to poke a pointed tool into there to release the wire from the clip. It's a PITA, but once you get the hang of it they come apart pretty easy.
Just make sure to label the wires where they go before you take them apart or There are #s on the clip...write down the color to the #. On some of the black ones (because black is used 2 to 3 times) I labeled what # they were.
Theres a detailed thread on here by mudpuddle on how to remove the wires from the clip, that really helped me out.
Here's for the next person trying to do this and realizes that the plug needs to be removed for it to fit thru the headlight brow. You will have to remove the plug from the wiring harness that connects underneath your console. My tool was made from an allen wrench and was ground down to a small flat head. Fabricate your own or use a small flathead from a glasses repair kit. Anyways, if this is your first time, it will be a matter of experimenting but it's just a simple task of sticking the flat head in the connector and pressing down on the plastic tang which holds in the connector. As pictured, label your wires before getting started. The plastic connector already has the #'s stamped in it. When it comes time to put it all back together, the pins will snap back into place.
