Just drilling or poking out the plug will leave you with a louder exhaust that sounds like crap. My dealer cuts out the whole baffle assembly. This leaves an open glass pack type muffler that has a nice deep sound that IMHO sounds better than the SEIIs. I have no idea what it does for performance.
On the stock baffles I believe I read some where the bike will run like crap.... There is site out there that was installing different size washers in the muffler that acted like the trap type exhausts. Try this site for exhaust info... http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/exhaust.htm
Haven't done it on an FX, but I did drill a couple holes in the end cap of the stock mufflers on my Sporty.
It did make it louder. That's the only good I can say about it. The sound wasn't right, and the bike did not run as well.
If you have a new exhaust on order, and you just can't wait, drill a hole in the end cap of each baffle to get a little more sound. Or just be patient, and wait on the new exhaust.
i have a 05 superglide, i drilled the baffels out on it. i removed the whole baffel. as far as the sound goes i like it much better than any 2 pipe exaust i have heard. as for the people that say it sounds like **** goes, they are tone deaf... there is no need to spend money on pipes unless you have more money than you know what to do with.... i have heard that you loose a little low end tork but you will never notice it. anyway its a harley not a crotch rocket so you still have all the power you need...
I knocked a 1/2 in. punch through the plug on my HD baloney cuts, sounds pretty throaty without being too loud and runs strong so I don't see a problem. All this "it'll run like sh*t" stuff is nonsense. As long as the bike is jetted or downloaded correctly it'll work fine.
