There is a huge thread on this topic that will make your head spin. To each their own. I run Syn 3 in crank, Formula + in Primary and Mobil 1 75-90 in Tranny. Will switch to Mobil VTwin next time but I had the Syn 3 on hand. Noticed the 1st gear "clunk" has disappeared. I am smelling tranny fluid when the bike gets hot though. Never noticed it before I switched to the 75 90. Didn't spill a drop so I don't know what is causing the smell.
Mobil 1 75w140 syn gear oil is very good also. Head spin is right. Go to the oil forum in tech or do it yourself areas and you can read for hours. Harley does not recomend syn 3 for the tranny anymore. Use a gear oil like your dealer suggested.
HD manual lists Formula + for tranny and primary. Engine oil's they say HD oils HD multi grade SAE10W40 for below 40deg F , HD multi grade 10W50 above 40 degF, HD reg heavy SAE 50 for above 60 deg F, And HD extra heavy SAE 60 for above 80 deg F.
I personaly run formula + in tranny and primary. Mobil 1 15w50 full syn in the engine. Over 23k no internal problems.
M1 20w50 v-twin in engine, M1 syn gear lube in tranny and Syn3 in primary, both dyna's. My primaries seem to like the syn3, maybe it's compatible with the clutch plates and wear seems to be minimal.
