This is what I use...

Mobil1 20W50 V-Twin synth in engine and primary
Amsoil 75W90 Severe gear synth in tranny.

I also use HD spark plugs, genuine earth air in my tires, Meguire's car wash soap, S-100 cleaner and wax, Pig Spit and last but not least I use Charmin after a late night Taco Bell run along with a huge Wal-Mart plunger as needed.

why would you use gear oil in a primary? I understand ATF and engine oil, but gear oil makes no sense to me

Here's three things that convinced me to give it a try. I started off looking for Redline MTL for the primary, and Redline SPH for the tranny but cannot find them here in CA. (Original post question is what caught my eye on this thread.)

#1. After spending way too much time on the Internet, figured that the MTL product was pretty much gear oil as you can see from their spec.
#2. Understand that many folks use lighter oils, but based on finding many gear oils spec'd for primary (ex: KH-C80).
#3. After reading the HD Knowledge on Primary Oils, post #124, it would appear that they're pretty much the same. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/4594627-post124.html

I'm hoping this is not a hugh mistake, because I'm stopping on the way home from work this evening and getting the filter, o-rings etc. I've already bought the oils.... I guess I can always change it out later if it's sticky or hard to shift.

I'm trying to find some Mobil 1 V Twin for my primary and tranny but so far all I've been able to find is the motor oil.

There is only one Mobil 1 V-Twin, it says it is safe to use in all 3 holes. I've never used it in the tranny on the Street Bob but I do use it in the engine and primary. I also used it in the engine and combined primary/tranny on the Sportster I used to have. It worked fine but just don't go looking for any Mobil 1 V-Twin branded tranny or primary fluid cause there ain't none.
