Default Mini Ape Windshield idea Updated with pics

This may or may not be a new idea. I really don't care for the look of a bulky windshield so i thought I might try making a small windshield that would block some of the wind off my chest. Here is my first attempt. It's made from 1/8" Lexan or polycarbonate. It actually does a very good job of blocking the wind off my chest but I do get a pretty good blast of air at about eye level. I plan to make another one out of 3/16" Lexan and making it about 1-3/4" taller to try to get the blast of air to the top of my head and a little rounder on the top. So far for this size I have about $23 into it with clamps, hardware and the lexan. Until you get up close you don't even notice it and from the side it's almost completely invisible.

Has anyone else tried making a windshield like this?

Looks good man, let us know if it works better being a bit taller.

I was thinking about something pretty much like that. I don't care much for having the windshield on my bike, but, it's difficult to sustain 75-90 mph speeds on the highway without a windshield. I was thinking of trying a Flyscreen.

On your project... and I have no idea how you'd accomplish this... perhaps, rather than taller, you just need the top of the windshield to be bent out a little bit. Also, changing the angle might move the airflow up over your head better.

I did try to heat the shield with a torch and bend it, I did get a little bend in it but not enough. I need to use a heat gun so I don't overheat one spot and create some bubbles in it. I did try some different angles a little bit using some spacers between the shield and clamps. I think the little bit taller and using a heat gun and bending the top out a little will be the ticket.

Hopefully I will be able to get the new piece this week and test it out.

Looks good. I was thinking about doing the same to my bike. Where did you get the clamps?

I saw a windshield at a rally yesterday, permanent mounts clamped to the bars, with swing up clip/magnet mounting struts. Darn thing folds up and into a small bag when not in use, and the mounting struts fold down flat across the bottom of the bars. Pretty slick. Talked to the guy, he's selling them, but I can't find anything on the web for him. I'll keep looking.....

I got the clamps at ACE hardware for about $1.20 each. Then just 4 allen head 1/4" bolts with nuts and some rubber washers.

Here is a link to some similar clamps. They are the 1" size.

That does sound slick. If you find any info especially pics or prices please let me know.
