I picked up my new-to-me 06 Lowrider and I'm getting a serious vibration coming from what seems like the front rotor. This only happens when I pull the front brake lever. It feels like a warped rotor, but with all the other front end issues I've been reading about on these bikes (oh, and yes, it also has a clunk - maybe head bearings) I'm now asking to see if anyone else has had this particular problem, or if it's well-known to be associated with another problem (can't seem to find anything related in the searches I've done).
The bike only has 10,600 miles, and the pads look to have a decent amount of life left.
How can I check for warpage? Should I just change the pads/rotor and see if that fixes the problem (I dont like to throw money blindly at a problem though)
Any advice is appreciated.
BTW - Great site and great community! I've been learning alot...
I would take it to a repair shop, have the mechanic test ride it and offer his opinion... then you can order the parts or let them fix what ever the final problem is. You sure dont need problems like this if you're going 70 mph down the road and need to brake hard.
If your bike has floating rotors they will viberate when you use them. Another thing to check is the bolts holding the rotor on.My bolts came a little loose and alowed the rotor to move just a little(clunk).I removed them one at a time and re aplyed red locktight& torked them to spec.
Hey fixxr, did you really use red loctite on those caliper mount bolts? You'll need some serious heat to bust them loose next time. Blue loctite and the proper torque should be sufficient. The bolts on mine are torqued to 28-38 ft.- lbs.
I'll go re-torque them and take it for a ride. I put a dial indicator gauge on it - there were definitely a couple high and low spots on the rotor, but nothing jumped out as way out of wack.

A very small amount of runout on a motorcycle brake rotor will cause a lot of brake judder because the caliper and rotor transmit any vibration directly to the handlebars which you are holding. I would try a new rotor & pads.

I use blue on the caliper and Red on the rotor.(damn rotor aint comming loose again)

Yep - that's my next move. (bummer)
What's the recommendation on a rotor? I think Zanotti wants like $170 for the new rotor. I think I'll try the Lyndall Gold pads - everyone says good things about them.
