Default Heavy Breather oil ???????

I've noticed my heavy breather looses it's color pretty often. I clean and re-oil it but it seems like I'm doing it too often. I also noticed the oil seems to sink to the bottom of the filter and actually drip onto my pipes but the top looks colorless!!!! WTF. Am I using the wrong oil? do I need something thicker? Or is this normal? I use the K&N spray on oil and cleaning kit. Thanks for the help in advance.

If its dripping you are getting it to heavy.

I reoil mine about every 1,000 miles depending on how dry it looks. I only clean it when it looks like it needs it. With no cover on it they will dry out quick on the top.

OK then. 1000 miles sounds about the same as I am re-oiling it. I just felt 1000miles was too often. Sounds like I'm not the only one.

Ya it did to me at first as well.

Then I started looking at other peoples and they were all dry as a bone. Buddy runs his outerwears all the time and it doesnt dry out as quick.

I did the same with mine. I think the trick is to have patience when oiling it. Put on a light coat and wait 20 minutes or so for it to really soak in. Then look for spots where the color is lighter and hit those areas lightly and wait again for it to really soak in.

+1 on multiple light coats! When I did mine I did 2-3 light coats and let it sit over night to soak in real good. To tell you the truth, I kinda like the dirty look better! It matches the paint!

holy ****! Every 1,000mi! Where did you find this interval at? Can you validate it? Asking because it seems way excessive and also I’m way behind if true. I clean and re-oil every oil change.

The post you're replying to is 15 years old and @A-10 KChawg was last here 8 years ago.

EDIT: On a helpful note, I only oil my filters once a year when I clean them. I do see dry spots also but unless it is completely dry, meaning the media is back to its original color, it should still be filtering.

Yeah my heavy breather loses the red color in about 200 miles. Does that mean the oil is totally gone? Doubt it.

WAY TOO MUCH OIL!!!!!!!!!! K&N also suggests 50,000 Clean and Re Oil interval.
