Default lower shocks for 2009 super glide custom

I'm wanting to put lowering shocks on my 09 fxdc to drop the seat height. I will be putting p/n 54619-08 or 54628-06 on my bike. My questions is do I need to lower the front end. I want the bike to sit level. Second part of this question is, after a few more pay checks I plan to put a 21inch rim on the front, will this change the angle is so does any one know what part number or parts I will need to do this.

Thanks for any help,

I put 12 inch shocks on my SG and didnt lower the front any. It changed the feel a little but doesnt look like its not level.

I wouldnt pay that kind of money for stock Harley shocks though. I bought a set of Used Street Bob shocks off ebay to try out to make sure 12 inch was what I wanted before putting on some better shocks.

12" Progressive 412 heavy duties on mine for less than $200 shipped. Didn't do anything to the front end and I like it how it is. Tank lift and thin seat give the perception that it is higher in the front anyway.

Lots of shock options out there. I'd look elsewhere besides HD if buying new.

Probably check E-Bay or classified here, https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-parts-119/ for a set of LR or St. Bob take-off shocks.

Here's some sites to look at if going for new shocks:

Thanks for all the information, new harley owner (first bike) I keep forgetting there is other options out there than the dealer. This forum has been great, I've used it a couple times.

Been there. The sooner you realize and accept that, the more money you will save and you will typically get better product for the money too. Here's another revelation - a lot of these things are fairly easy to do yourself without taking it to a HD service department, and they can be done without violating your warranty. That will save you a ton too. My bike doesn't go to the dealer anymore and never will unless it has to for a factory recall or something that won't cause me to spend a dime of my own money there.

you don't need to lower the front. If you want a more level looking bike, then you should get a front end lowering kit. Progressive makes a nice slip in kit that is very easy to install and you can lower it 1" or 2". Be sure to get the newer kit out there where you just need to remove and replace your stock springs with the kit. It's about 120 bucks. Also for rear shocks, I would recommend getting works performance or Ohlins. the 21" front tire will raise the front a bit(3/4" or so).

I've thought of lowering my '09 SG but since I put the forward controls, I drag my heel of the boot on corners and I'm not really laying it down either, so be careful it really is plenty low IMHO, sit on it and have someone take a pic.

883 you either got a big foot or are weighing the bike down quite a bit. I'm 6'4", 225 (and shrinking) with 12" shocks and have layed mine over as far as I care too sometimes when riding fun twisties aggressively and have never drug a boot or a peg or anything else on the bike.

Also, another 2 cents on the shocks, if the OP is just looking to lower the bike and not a huge performance upgrade, some decent progressives or stock streetbob or lowrider takeoffs are all he needs. And rather than putting that 120 bucks into a front end lowering kit, I'd put it into something else. You'll notice the bike is lower when you sit on it but it won't look significantly unlevel unless you have a very discriminating eye. I'd at least change out the rear shocks first and then do the front later if I just couldn't live with the look.

Default 12 inch shocks here.

I installed new shocks that are 1 inch shorter and find that I scrape the exhaust bracket all the time on right turns. Now I have air shocks that aren't as firm as the Progressive ones, but I'm 5'11" and 205lbs. I also ride very aggressively. Just my $.02
