Is the 2008 Mustang a Mustang just because it doesn't look exactly like a 65' Mustang...sure. Each has the Mustang DNA or features. Same with the WG. Bravo to HD for taking it forward..it was getting boring IMHO. Sure there's not alot of chrome on it...the blacked-out thing is happening now. There's things about it I would change if I was in the market for one. If I was replacing my Low Rider I'd consider the Fat Boy Lo...I have to give that the edge over the WG...but my tastes have been known to change!
Personally I love what the big 3 ae doing with the styling of the current musclecars. Mixing old and new technology. I love the new mustangs (and I don't like mustangs), camaro (LOVE IT!), challenger and charger...I like the challenger more. Definitely the closest to the musclecar look of the late 60's with new technology. Love it.
As far as the new WG....well, it's been around a long time and has gone through some styling changes. I like most of what the MoCo has done with it. Of course there is still plenty of room for improvement or customization.
I think thats what owning a harley is about. Taking a stock bike and making it yours. No one says you have to leave that sidemount plate on, or those ugly handlebars. The bobtail fender is either loved or hated by people. I have a love/hate relationship with it myself. Customizing the backend of a late model WG is rough. Older (2005 and older) is easier because the aftermarket has plenty of parts to choose from.
To be honest I like the bike. It looks badass imho. I like the risers and bars and the orange-flame paint from the factory looks cool as hell. The stock seat and pillion looks cool, My main gripe is the blacked out rims, but that is an easy switch.
Reserving judgment on the new WG till I see one in person.
I did not like pics of the Fat Bob when it first came out but when I saw one in person I fell in love.
Like the old song says..."she may be ugly but she sure can cook!!"
I'm liking it. What's in a name, anyway? At least they didn't call it Dyna-Muscle.
The Wide Glide did get short changed on the color options though...only 2 solid colors is kind of weak. But I guess the limited palette is pretty much true across most of the models.
I don't like it at all. I'm sure glad I got my '07 when I did. My opinion is this. The WG had distinct styling since its inception in 1980. This is what I liked about it and why I bought it. To me it looks like a cross between a fat bob and sportster. I prefer the classic styling but then again, my wife reminds me that my age suggests classic styling so go figure.
I'll hold on tighter to my '07. And when I pull up next to a '10 WG and all of my factory and added chrome blinds the other guy, I'll just smile and say "Lovin that blacked out bike?"
I had a 80 Wide Glide once and then a 1984 FXR.When I went to buy a new bike in 06 I loved the looks of the Night train but it didnt fit me too well, legs too long I reckon so I bought the Wide Glide.I do like my 06 better than the new one though.
However if Harley had to design a new Glider and came to this very forum for the design for it and styling clues, they would have came up with the very bike they produced for 2010.
Look at the current trends in Dynas in this forum.I would have to say that some may be due to the Street Glide being so popular with the denim paint. There are a **** load of folks who like the blacked out look, myself included.I am amazed at the pictures of bikes that people post on this forum. After seeing years and years of bikes with chrome this and chrome that it got to a point where the only thing that wasn't chrome was the rider and the tires.
Being most harley riders try to individualize their bikes, and the chrome thing has all been done countless times, all black is the next step. When I re do the FXR it will be all black,no chrome if I can help it.I have quite a few friends who swear that a Harley should come in one color, black and wont ride anything else.Just to be different I bought mine in sliver.
One question,is it still rolling off the plant in York?If it is,I may buy the 010 model.
